Editing blacks out waveform

I'm a newbie at editing and am having problems trying to remove parts of an audio clip and then tying the rest of it together.

When going through muting, erasing, deleting, and moving operations, I have managed to turn the clip completely black and can no longer see the wafeform.  When this happened before, the only way I could find the waveform again was to close Sonar without saving, and then starting over.

So, 2 questions:  How can I see the waveform again so I can continue editing?  And, what would be a good specific sequence to delete part of a clip, and then piece the remaining parts togeher?

Thanks.

Have you changed the foreground and background colours in the clip view tab?

You probably used the mute tool. Maybe! I dunno

I just use the cut tool, and the use of crossfades and the dragging of clips

Yes, I used the mute tool and it looked like it should, with a dotted line around what was the wave form.  Some combination of events caused it to black out.   (I did not change the colors.)

I don't see anything in the Tools Module called the "cut tool."  What do you mean and how do you use it?  Is that the "erase tool?"

I noticed something else.  In the area that is blacked out, but nevertheless plays the audio, the Select Tool is shown as a cross rather than the nornal cursor symbol  (same with the Smart Tool).  I can't get them to change back to their normal selves.

    Thanks for the help.

Just hit 'T' to access the Smart Tool, you can select which tool you want from there.

Regarding your waveform, are you sure you haven't zoomed in on it vertically?

No,have not changed colors. The part of the clip that I have not tried to edit shows up as it should. Only the edited part shows up black.

Have you tried redrawing/recomputing the wave forms?

Well, I found the problem.  As Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does."

I had cloned the original track for safe-keeping.  It was scrolled below the view.  When I thought I was hearing the track that was blacked out, it was actually the cloned track that I had neglected to mute!

Thanks for trying to help, guys, but you had no chance.
