Smart tool in staff view?

I was hoping the smart tool would work the same in staff view as it does in PRV.  Anyone have any ideas on how to make it work w/o having to revert to the keyboard, or go up to the icon so often?  Thanks.

    Hi Janet,

    Do you mean when trying to select different note durations? For that, you can click your middle mouse button (or press T on your keyboard) to bring up the Tools HUD. Then choose a duration from the drop-down menu that's labeled with 1/4 (or some other numeric duration).

    Thanks Scott.  Not different note durations necessarily, but just changing between delete and add a note and move and then scrub to listen to one measure.  Now I'm always having to hit F5 or the delete icon or J or something.

    Hi Janet,

    Oh, okay. Well, you can do most of those things with the one Smart tool, but yeah, they require keyboard shortcuts. X1 relies heavily on the keyboard and there's not really any way around that.

    Phooey...I wish I would have known that before I bought it.  Oh well, I can use 8.5 for composing and editing and then see if X1 offers anything I can use for mixing.  Thanks Scott!

    (8.5 relies on the keyboard too, but with the keys being all grouped together on the left side, it's extremely fast and not cumbersome at all.)

    The only thing I use the keyboard for when using the Smart Tool is having to press 'j' for scrub - all other commands can be invoked directly from the Mouse.

    I also write  music.

    you can still bind any key you want to the tools you need in preferences -> keyboard shortcuts.

    for example:
    d = global draw tool
    e = global erase tool
    s = global select tool

    this won't give you the same functions as the smart tool in PRV but it'll give you back what you had in 8.5 :)

    Bristol...even in staff view?

    Thank you, Loptec...I'll try that.  I figured there had to be a way to do that!

    Ah, no Janet - I do all my writing in the PRV - that's if I can't play it via keyboard Lol!!

    Yeah, I usually just play things on the keyboard, but there's always some editing needed, which I sometimes want to do in the staff view.  I didn't realize that would be such a rare thing.

    Hey guys,   not sure if this helps, but...I picked up a Logitech G110 gaming computer keyboard a while back.  It has 12 "smart keys" (x3 so actually 36 with a push of a button) on the side that you can program keystrokes.  I  like using keybindings and X1 took a lot of those.

    I would think you could be able to program the keyboard to compensate for any keybinding or smart tool short comings.  It works well for me.

    if you have a controller with buttons act presets can give you 4 X the selections of bindings because you can cycle through 4 banks of assignments.

    what would be nice is if there was an explanation of the things we can control via a button push as the list of assignable functions in the options page for a act preset is not that enlightening as to what those functions actually do, some are obvious but not all are so obvious and we need an explanation or an example explaining the way to use that functionality. Just saying and said it before and probably will continue to say it till someone shows me were these functions are described in a manual somewhere hint hint.
