Midi file and z3ta

Hi. I'm having a problem getting z3ta to play a midi file from sibelius 7. I created a few bars that I wanted to use, I exported it to a midi file, then copied it over to sonar (x1 producer). I select the preset I want in zeta, but when i play the midi file it switches back to the first preset it always has when it first starts up. Why is this happening? I assume there is some midi explanation that I've not learned yet. And how do i fix it? I did try for a couple of hours though before asking. Kind regards, Lindy

Hopefully someone familiar with Sibelius will weight in but it sounds to me like the MIDI file it is creating has more that node data. I would expect that there are switches in sibelius to control the information be saved to the MIDI file. You can look/edit at the midi information in SONAR via the MIDI Event Viewer.

I figured that Sibelius was sending control data to zeta that was telling it what presets to go to. But I edited the midi events and got rid of everything that said control, and anything other than a note. What if I did want to add control information to a midi file to make it pick a certain preset? Where would I find the docs that tell me how to do that? Kind regards Lindy

I don't know anything about Sibelius.  I suspect you would have better luck on a forum for Sibelius.

That would be a function of the synth. I am not sure Z3ta can do that, it would be in it's documentation.

I am assuming that I want to tell Sibelius not to send certain control data, but I don't see that. However, shouldn't SONAR midi editor allow me to take it all out? But one thing that I am thinking of. I picked a piano sound, which is probably associated with GM in some way and that is telling z3ta to switch presets. I'll explore that a little. Thanks. Lindy

I recall a similar thread years ago and it was either a problem with Finale or Sibelius and it turned out the application has a bunch of checkboxes somewhere to control what data was exported into the MIDI file. Anyway, the SONAR Event List is the tool I have used to cleanup MIDI files.

I think also that the event list will let me clean stuff up. I just don't see anything but notes. I've clicked on everything I can find to look for it. A bit frustrating. Sibelius made it so easy to create the midi notes.

Make sure the Event viewer is showing all data. It has the ability to filter what you see.

LindyK, z3ta+ is not the best GM Synth to use (tts-1 would be a better choice), but the answer for how to make MIDI select the correct patch is the same. Either import the MIDI file into Sonar or use virtual MIDI cables to connect Sibelius to Sonar (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57afXavIO7Q). Open the MIDI file with Sonar's Event List. Navigate to the beginning of the file (or prior to where you want the patch to begin), tap the keyboard Insert key. Right click on the event you inserted and choose Patch. Double-click on the data field in the 2nd column from the right to brign up the Bank/Patch Change window. Select the Bank Select Method (Normal), the bank (e.g., 0-bank 0), and the desired patch (e.g., virus bass 01). Now, when you play the file, the Patch message will change the synth to the patch you programmed. I hope this helps.

Oh my head hurts. :-) Finally found it. Dragging in a midi file changed the bank stuff on the inspector for that midi track. Now I don't know how to use that yet, but to get what I wan I set it to None, Bank:--- and None. Then it doesn't change. I now assume I have more control over z3ta now from a track, just got to take time to figure it out. Thanks for helping me with this. Lindy
