If Bapu is a stupid face
I'm probably a butt-head. The little dipper I got from Amazon only got to 129 degrees. So now I'm going to try an old crock pot my wife had stashed...it was one of our wedding presents from Dec. of '75. I hope it doesn't work as good and I get 140 on low. She gets a star. Now the reason I may be a butt-head...now remember I don't cook. I know much of nothing about tools or what goes on in a kitchen. So I'm looking at Amazon for something to melt wax to a specific temp. and thinking cooks and cooking tools will have a handle on that so no problem. WRONG...the manufacturers don't tell what their stuff will do and the reviewers remark with "warm", "just right", "to hot", "not hot enough"....etc. so I'm a butt-head for having no good thoughts and many very bad thoughts and one of them is what I'd like to do with the food thermometer I had put in the basket. (having to shop now too) Well fine. I'm not apologizing. I also put a remark for all of them to think about. If you're going to talk about equipment that is meant to get hot and even has settings to control it -then include the pertinent information. After all they go to the trouble of telling folks how to move their face out of the way so they don't steam their stupid face removing the lid....like they have it together- they started the mess by not including the temp capabilities...if you ask me. I know that is asking a lot and how hard it can be for some but as a butt-head I think that they would all benefit from thinking a little....maybe then they'd realize that some foods need to be heated to 140 degrees F. so they don't **** the little bit of brains out that they have. Oh well. Sometimes chicken, sometimes feathers. And just so this time while waiting for my supper to get cooked...yeah I got run out of the kitchen...asking to many questions... I'll make amends with....Beer. Becan......and Am. Supper's ready!! Excellent timing. :)

You don't need to apologize for being correct. They're very possibly my famous last words.

I would get a used glass stovetop pot from a thrift store and just use the stovetop... or any non-reactive pot (used/cheap) then leave the wax in it for future use. Something like a piece of this Corningware with a lid. Should be easy to find a piece somewhere. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Corningware-French-White-8-Piece-Set/5832241/product.html?rcmndsrc=2 Your OP reminds me of the thread on GS re: Guitar Center employee stories... The world is filled with people who are representatives of this or that and they are dumb as a rock about the stuff they are supossed to know. IMO, J

Ed the only thought I had was in "naming"...nicknames and I hate it when people seem to be so stupid that it makes me feel like a smartass. But man...temperature ratings and control seem to be a no brainer to me-but I'm not a cook...just seems stupid that there is no information...I admit to being a butthead for thinking bad about those doing something I know nothing about. Maybe it's just so simple that people don't need what I think is pertinent information. Maybe they don't care what temperature water boils...I'm out of my confort zone with this. J one of my issues is that I don't want to be melting wax in my house. I need a way to do it in my shop and just as your thinking- in a container that I can leave the wax in. That is why I got the little mini warmer that I posted a picture of in the other thread...problem is it didn't melt the wax. That is what I couldn't believe...it seems like electric crock pots, warmers, fondue pots and such have to be purchased and used before one can know the temp. range and it's seeming to me that all the electric models low setting is 25 degrees F more than I need. ( 165 f.) I need 140. I even searched on making candles thinking they'd point me in the right direction...nope. Silly me. The double boiler is the safest way to melt wax is what I'm thinking. I believe an electric hot plate and a double boiler is my best shot. I've been shopping again. :/ Still trying to pick out the stuff right now...tired of trying to get something that is "auto"...I'll control the temp myself.

You need a double-boiler and a candy or a meat thermometer. A double boiler can be purchased easily or rigged just by filling a normal pot with water and set to a boil-- Place a smaller (throwaway, since the wax will kill the nice pans) pan on top of the boiling water. That's right. Double'd up. The boiling water will heat the top most pan without burning what is in it. Mostly, this is used for chocolate, but it's also good for melting wax. Put the thermometer in and adjust your burner as needed. You can find a cheapie throwaway pan at a dollar store, usually. Might have to, pay $5 for the thermometer, though. Helps?

Thank you for the confirmation Julibee. I'm glad I didn't give up. I did order a hot plate and double broiler but I found what I think is exactly what I was looking for. Finally used the correct searching term I guess. This is what I found. It's larger than what I wanted but at least they mentioned the temperatures and more wax isn't a problem. What a trip.

Wow, I didn't know it was so involved. I'm glad I haven't gotten around to melting wax. I had no idea I needed to use a double boiler or wax pot. I was just going to put it in a used pan and put it on the stove until it melted... I'm glad I read this thread! J

What my ex did was simply take a normal cooking pot, fill in half-way with water, then put in a plastic container with the wax in it. Nothing fancy. Note that this is also a good way to de-crystalize honey.

Spacey I have had the same frustrations under different circumstances. I think the reason that they don't put exact numbers on their thermostats is because if they did then they would need to actually make the device go to that temp and they know that since the thermostats are so cheaply made with such a large swing between them it is impossible. They would have warranty returns all the time. So they make it simple by making a thing that gets hot in the middle and hotter turned all the way up. I noticed the same trend in car gauges awhile back. No real nunbers ,you just know you have oil pressure. You might know the water temp is getting hot but never know exacly how hot it got. A lot of the things they sell for kitchens are like that. My stove has poor control as I have one of those electric stoves with the burners under a glass top. They constanly run away on temps either too hot or too cold. The best control is a gas range. All the top chefs use gas. I just bought one of those George Forman grills with the removable heat plates. It does have a more exact thermostat on it but I haven't checked to see how accurate it is.

What I didn't mention was that they often sell the wax melting pots at big box craft stores--- I was being cheap. :) Lots of people make their own candles-- Michaels and Hobby Lobby both have pretty large candle making supply aisles. You could even buy coloring should you need. Oh, and scents, too. You could have the best smelling guitar, ever. LOL (That IS what you're doing, right?)

I was hoping there wouldn't be much to it and not waste money but.... LOL I did think of the smell. Yes, the wax is for the pickups Julibee. It is suppose to prevent microphonic feedback due to the components of the pickup vibrating. I learned that it is very dangerous melting wax and it wasn't something I wanted to have to stand over...that would be to much like cooking to me. So I assumed it wouldn't be hard to find a tool that would melt and keep the wax at a desired temperature...140f is what I wanted. Location is an issue due to I have only electricity in my shop and nothing to heat with as this required and did not want to be melting it in the house. My requirements didn't seem like much to me. I was quickly surprised. Naturally some of the problems were my ignorance but not being involved until now that didn't bother me as much as finding out the amount of ignorance with the ones that are. I've never cared for "idiot" gauges. Not my terminology but I can sure understand how it came about. Well I found somebody that has been handling wax for many years and better still, paying attention. Now I just have to wait. I think the one I linked to is perfect. I really like it having a drain valve too. I post info about how the unit works and how the potting part went. Believe it or not I still think I'm under what just the winder from Stu-Mac would have cost (400 US) and I have the winder, 3 - 1lb spools of wire, Strat and Tele materials to build pups, misc. tools... Now this pot which is about 80 dollars, the cost of a pup....I think it put me over the 400... Not bad.....but I did leave out the stroke I just about had. Got so pissed at ignorance I probably lost a year easily LOL. It's nice to have friends that understand...my wife just writes me off as a butthead. :) "Now be nice" is what she always tells me.....I love her. :)
