VST multi outputs: no sound
Hi everybody, I'm new in this forum. I hope someone can help me to fix this problem. I would like to use a soft synth (such as Kontakt) with multi outputs, in order to use more than 16 MIDI channels (since I'm interested in writing orchestral music). Unfortunately, whatever VST I use, the only track which plays is the MIDI one, while there is no sound in the synth tracks. I don't understand where is my mistake, I followed the suggestion in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RC73PrrMxXc but it doesn't work, can you tell me why? Thank you very much.

Midi tracks don't make sound - they are simply data generators and drive your synths.

Thank you for answering. Maybe I didn't express myself properly: I mean I can hear no sound after I insert the soft synth and the MIDI data in the synth tracks. But according to the video above, I should. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I can't view the video here due to work restrictions, and I'm not at all familiar with Kontakt. However....before you get bogged down trying to configure a 16 output multi timbral synth, it might be best to master how a simple synth works. In Track view, select Insert > Soft Synth and choose something like the Pentagon. In the options box, don't select "Simple Instrument Track", use separate Midi & audio tracks, and make sure you've got "Enable first synth output" checked This should work.

But according to the video above, I should. Any suggestions? Thanks. Tutorial 4 it is. Learn to walk before you try running. But about Kontakt: Insert Kontakt in Synth Rack (not Track). Every instrument/MIDI track need as MIDI channel of it's own, otherwise they play back simultaneously. You must set it also inside Kontakt/per instrument, not only in the MIDI-tracks header.

Also if you go to the site in the video as suggested you can download their templates Here The template is in a rar file so you'll need to extract it, open sonar and locate it from there. To midi loop included is awful but that's not the point Steve

You have to have a separate MIDI track for each instrument. So, for example, MIDI Track 1 - assigned to Channel 1 will play the instrument in the rack that has the MIDI channel set to 1 MIDI Track 2 - assigned to Channel 2 will play the instrument in the rack that has the MIDI channel ser to 2 and so on. In order to play 16 different instruments, you would need 16 MIDI tracks each assigned to one MIDI channel and Kontakt would need 16 instruments set to receive on each of those channels.

Thanks for all the answers. I can already work on single track VST, so I wanted to learn something more. How do you write for an orchestra with only 16 channels? That's the point. Thanks for the templates link. Where can I find the tutorial 4? I'm not sure to which one you refer to. Thank you.

And furthermore- Do not forget to set the MIDI tracks output to the soft synth. Try TTS-1 as well, It is very easy to use and is a full 16 channels. I like it's GUI interface which has a lot of hidden features. Take some time and explore it in detail. I find I can mix all 16 instruments from there. Don't settle for defaults, you can edit most sounds and the EFX. You can insert more than one copy of each soft synth in the synth rack,, but you need a lot of memory for that. So using 1 instance of the TTS-1 saves a tonne of memory. As said above, each midi instrument just needs it's own channel per synth. You can use the same channels if they are assigned to different soft synths. Once again- Lots of memory needed to do this stuff.

Thanks. I use EWSO Gold library, but I would like to use more than 2 instances: do I have to buy slots to do so? When I used Logic I could have illimited synth tracks, called "audioinstruments", so I wanted to do something similar with Sonar... it's not possible?

The number of outputs is coded in the soft synth, AFAIK. Not Logic nor any other DAW can add those outputs into Kontakt (??). You can run as many instances of any soft synth as your computer can handle. I don't think there are any soft synths that can output a symphony orchestra with just one instance, but I'm not sure. That would be an immense job. You must study the Kontakt manual now, that's where the answer lies. When you insert Kontakt just choose "All audio outputs".

My Orchestral template consist of 9 instances of EWQL's PLAY engine. Two for strings, two for brass, two for w/winds, two for percussion, and one for some other bits & pieces (Piano/harp etc) This is the main reason why I have 32Gb of RAM installed Fully loaded with no note data eats into about 12Gb

Thank you for answering. That's the point, Bristol Jonesey: if I open 2 instances of EWQL as simple instrument tracks, that's 16 MIDI channels, so I can't open other instances. I find it too uncomfortable to bounce it all when I want more than 16 tracks. I suppose the only way to open other instances of EWQL is to select "all synth audio outputs" connected to only 1 MIDI track, but I miss the reason why it doesn't work for me. Can you tell me how do you manage to open 9 instances, please? Thank you!

Your not reading some of the replies, You can open as many as you like and each one can have 16 channels. Synth A channel 1 , Synth B channel 1. etc. Only the synth that the MIDI track is set to output to will play even though there could be a bunch of tracks using ch1.

THANK YOU! Now it's clear, it works with simple instruments!!! I read all the answers, it's just I didn't understand! (Maybe because I was too sure I couldn't use the same channel twice or more). It's a main improvement for me, thanks so much!
