Click/drag to enter notes in piano roll

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I've been on Sonar Producer 3 for years and only just upgraded to X1 this week (never felt the need to upgrade before). I guess a lot has changed in 8 years so it's obviously like a completely different piece of software to me now! When I used to manually enter notes on the piano roll in S3, I sometimes wouldn't have the cursor in exactly the right place when I clicked, so I would keep the mouse button held down and just moved the mouse left or right until it was in the right place and then released the mouse button which would drop 1 note where I wanted it. But if I do this in X1 (keep the mouse button down and drag left/right) I end up with a huge trail of notes left behind across the piano roll. Maybe this makes sense to most people if it's been this way for years but it just feels really wrong to me. Is there any way I can change the way notes are entered manually so they don't leave a trail when I click and move?

well, as you've you've stated, it is NOT the same software.

I would read the help files (F1) as it it pretty good at covering most things.

I too, am 'lazy' in keeping up with the latest.  Never mind the fact that I have paid for it and downloaded all of them... just not 'up to date' in the working world.

There are three 'types' of drag in the piano roll view from my experience (doesn't mean there is more :) )  The move the start, the move the entire thing and the move the end.

I have found it hugely important to zoom in till everything is 'right'  (i know, that is subjective) to edit it as needed, and then drag the note around.  The default of several bars being shown could be to 'large' - so zoom in and grab the note in the 'middle' of it to move it around!  I don't think by default Cake will dupe it.

    good luck!

A rack of noisemakers is not a definitive substitute for creativity. (though it does seem to help)

Just drag the dropped note to where you want or if you are using the draw tool right click to remove it and drop the note in the correct position.

BTW I JUST finished the section on PRV editing in the Sonar X1 Power book. I've never used PRV before and am just a MIDI beginner but it all makes sense now. It really is not an expensive book and it is super helpful. Check it out.

Thanks for the replies. I think I found the closest way to get back to my old working method. Using the smart tool and double clicking will add a new note and still be able to drag it around without leaving a 'trail' of notes behind. The only problem with this is I suffer from extremely painful tenosynovitis in my hands (inflammation of joints) so anything that makes for more clicking is not a good option for me. I guess I'll get used to the changes but you know what it's like - once you've developed a personal way of working, the smallest change to your workflow can feel odd... I will definitely get Scott's book - I bought Sonar 2 Power years ago and found it really useful. The only documentation I have for X1 is an 1,800 page pdf which ain't the most practical thing to read ;)

Thanks, thebluemask! If you decide to get it, I hope you enjoy the book too.

It truly is brilliant, Scott. I hope you have an X2 version in the works. I think I'm gonna need it. ;-)

@theblumask... If you do not want to double click using the Smart Tool you can use Alt+Click (with Smart Tool) to add your note. Again that is from X1 Power. The whole section on editing in PRV is very useful. Cheers.

Good call. There is probably a bunch of things you already know in it but even for little X1 specific workflow stuff like this it's invaluable. I personally am a beginner though so even the basic recording concepts he includes has taught me so much and it is very easy to read as opposed to the actual manual... which is still pretty good itself. Cheers!
