New computer - straight to X2?

Long-time lurker, first time poster. It's about time I thanked you for all the information and fun over the last many years!
I had a question, too - I'll be picking up my new computer today or tomorrow, and I'm wondering whether I need to re-install my Sonar X1d Producer Expanded on it, and then add X2 onto that when it comes out, or whether it's possible just to wait and do X2 as a fresh install (which sounds much simpler and cleaner). In other words, does X2 "look for" X1 or need any of its components to be installed before it will install itself?
Thank you and Hi!

No. Each new version of SONAR is a completely self container installation not dependent on any previous installation. Upgrade is simply a pricing issue whereby you get a discount based on previous purchase made.

Eligibility for upgrade is sorted at time of purchase not installation.

X1 is separate from X2. You can just install X2, if you'd like.

Typically, new versions of CW don't need a previous version to work.  They generally, are independent of each other unless you want the new version to import your key bindings and third party plug ins.

    Wait

    do a clean install...

    that's what I would do

If you have 3rd party (ig Kontakt, Superior Drummer etc) samples and library's you'd like to keep then I would look into getting and external Hard Drive enclosure that can house a few HD's, put 1 to 1.5 tb HD's inside ....transfer libraries in prepreation for the new install. Once the new install is done on the lappy then you can point your 3rd party plugs to the exterenal lib's and you may not have to reinstall all that software...

    May save you some time....

Check with Jim Roseberry and I am sure he could set you up correctly on just how to do this.

I would hate to wait for X2 if you already have a new PC.
Getting familure with your new system is worth the install X1, IMO.
Getting up to speed with X1, which is stable for me, then jumping to X2,
will seem like a piece of cakewalk,

You get the free X2 upgrade anyway if your just now buying X1, hard drive space is cheap.
Your time waiting , is not.

Besides, its nice to get the beta testing out of the way when a new version comes out.
I will buy X2 when it`s availible, but be using X1, until I see our forum buddies find
    the obvious bugs.

    Good luck and welcome!

FWIW, when I upgraded to X1 (from Sonar 7) I got a new PC too and installed only X1.  Then when opening projects done in S7, plug-ins didn't register properly, etc, which meant I had to install S7 again just to see which instruments and patches I had used.

I think part of the problem was also going from 32 to 64-bit app and plug-ins, so maybe X1 to X2 won't have the same issue.

Use X1 and when X2 come out install that. The X2 will be a fresh install as X1 and X2 are different. X2 wont be an extension of X1. Its a separate entity

Thank you all for the quick and helpful advice!

Yes, I do have 3rd party samples and libraries, especially Eastwest Play libraries(Symphonic Orchestra, Goliath, Silk, Ra, Voices, etc.), Abbey Road Drummer (all 4 sets), Maschine, many Waves plug-ins, Ozone and Nectar, Melodyne Editor, and some Antares plug-ins, although I don't use the Antares much at all.

I've been trying to organize in my mind what would be the right/most logical/least painful way to proceed to get this all working on the new computer.

I appreciate very much that anyone takes their valuable time and the effort to help a newcomer to these boards. So far, I have gleaned something useful from every response! Thanks again!

Me too! Skinnybones. I will get X2 and either jump in or wait while I get used to X1d, which I am still trying to organize as time permits. I too, have a lot to install and "order"; DimPro volumes 1-14, some SD3, Rapture, Zeta+2 (both the update and sounds to add), and IK Total Studio Bundle 3 plus GPO when I upgrade to 4 and maybe some other things that I have on my old P4 XP with Sonar 5.2PE. It is a lot of change at once and I seem to be distracting myself with the "problem" on the forum, rather than learning as I go.
Still I would love to get it mapped out nicely and learn how to organize it all on my new laptop, so it all works as and when it should! So ANY posts or articles on planning this out would be very appreciated and useful.
    Thanks Michael

Don't forget you can custom install only the older effects and synths from earlier versions of SONAR.  Mondo didn't have to install SONAR 7 - just the missing plugs.

    Re:New computer - straight to X2? 2012/09/05 09:03:35 (permalink)
For my situation, this is a new laptop and I have only installed X1d and haven't thought about what I will want to install from Sonar 5.2PE or my P4 XP setup. My desire is to organize my programs on C, CW projects-audio on D (internal and seperate 2nd drive), and libraries and backup audio on my external usb3 port/usb3 drive- H and I respectively. My ASUS G74sx has 4 usb ports, one of which is usb3, with 2 internal drives, each 500gb 7200rpm. The ext is 1Tb 7200 usb3. I am planning to build a new desktop in Dec-Jan for my main studio PC, so, the laptop is for winter time travelling, so I can still record-work on my music. I haven't done any networked PCs, yet and am reading up on that. Mostly, I want to efficiently install and use these new large libraries and explore that world, more(libraries and networked PCs). Coming from 49 years of pro guitarist and studio operator -13years of CW studio,  I know "a lot" about editing, recording and mixing on PC, I know much less about the internet and computers in general. I am catching up as fast as I can, jumping from S5.2PE and P4-XP (3 drive setup)to 64 bit Win7HP quad i7 and now X1d PE expanded .......soon to X2! Thanks for any advice-direction. Michael

To confirm what folks are saying SONAR X2 will be a separate install and does not require a previous version to install/run. For even more clarity, SONAR X2 installs to a separate directory. Some folks like to have the current and new version on the same machine as they migrate over to the new version. In addition, when installing SONAR X2 onto a machine with SONAR X1, preferences and directory settings can be migrated over to SONAR X2.

RE bringing instrumentals and songs from Sonar 5.2PE on my old P4 XP to X1 64bit and Windows7 on my new laptop. Since mine are all on a seperate PC and I am thinking I will save them as bundles and move them one at a time considering as I do whether to let go the old effects/plugs and learn to use the new ones. I guess I could print the tracks with and without plugs and compare.
It certainly was exciting to watch the CakeTV today on X2 and I do feel very motivated( and I have finished up lots of outdoors projects on my new house, so I am free-er to spend more time on the studio)
