X1/2 License
I thought I've read that you can't use the software on two machines simultaneously. By upgrading to X2 on my main music production machine, can I put my existing X1 on my laptop?

Sure. But you coud have Sonar on 2 PC's at the same time. You just cant use the 2 PC's at the same exact time. I think you miss-read the rules.. Cj

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong here: I think the licence says that A SINGLE USER can't RUN Sonar on more than two machines AT THE TIME, and two users can't use the same licence of Sonar on 2 computers, I tried finding the EULA in X1 help .. it seems it's not there. I remember that you have to click those agreements above when installing Sonar. (I don'T feel like re-installing right now!! X1 is stable as it never been here ;) HTH V

Echo Clay's Comment. Two installs are OK, you can just use one at a time. Put X2 on your laptop and your desktop, but only run it one one at a time. Glen

From the license agreement on the install dialog box. "one person use the enclosed Cakewalk software product (the "Product") on one personal computer at a time."

Rasure YES! if you have a license for both X1 and X2 you can use X1 on laptop and X2 on main machine. I think that is an incorrect interpretation. According to the license terms you would not be able to run both simultaneously unless they are independent full licenses... an upgrade is essentially the transferred rights from the prior license..so upgrading from X1 to X2 is one license, not two. But who on earth would need to run two machines simultaneously?.. I have X1 on my laptop and studio and i use whichever is appropriate at the time.. when i upgrade to X2, it will be on both machines also.

In fact you can have SONAR installed on more than 2 computers as long as you don't use them at the same time. To reiterate: an upgrade from X1 to X2 does not constitute a new licence. You still only have one licence. Even though I have every version since Cakewalk 7 I still only have 1 licence.

I have Studio X1 and I want to buy my assistant Sonar Studio X1 for $99 and get the free upgrade to X2 when it comes out using the current promo. Would I be able to load X2 on my existing license or would that only work on the license I would have recently purchase?

I've always thought the best way to understand these types of licensing agreements is to treat it like you would a physical book - only one person (any person) can read the book at any given time, sure someone can look over your shoulder, but ultimately only one of you is driving (flipping the page when "your" done reading it). It's a simple personal use licensing, some products will have different licensing schemes for different types of use (and charge differing rates based upon the usage). i.e. commercial use licensing, educational licensing, ... but as far as I know for the majority of Sonar users there is one licensing scheme. The enforcement (unless some form of physical check is performed say with something like iLok or a network licensing agent) is ultimately an honor based system. You "agree" to abide by the terms of the EULA and that's that. As has already been stated an "upgrade" is not a new license, it's simply the same license for a newer version of the product, but the same basic rule applies. Sure you can run Sonar X1 on one system and Sonar X2 on another, but the honor code in place requires you to only use one instance at any one time. You can't gift it to someone else, you can't sell the old version as you really only have one non-transferable license, ... so on and so on.

I could see a few wants for running Sonar on two systems at the same time. I've got a bunch of old cassettes and LPs kicking around I'd like to digitize so I could hook the deck/turntable to one machine, hit play/record then go mess around with other stuff on the second machine while I wait. Another reason would be for any real time bounces/mix downs/whatever. Not that I'd actually do that but those are a couple scenarios I can think of.
