Just Played a Gibson Hummingbird...
....and it was sh*t  As a lefty I never really get to enjoy guitar shops as much as I should. However, I went to 'GuitarGuitar' today in Birmingham UK and was able to play some of the more expensive guitars in left handed versions. Played a Hummingbird and was surprised at how normal it sounded for a £2000 + guitar. Also played a lefty Martin OM21 which was much nicer for £1799. Wonder how disappointed I'll be when I get my hands on a lefty 1959 VOS Gibson Les Paul! Rodders

When I was in Long Island, NY visiting Philz we went in the guitar room and after a couple of hours we determined that $700-$900 Taylors sound as good if not better than $2000-$3000 Taylors, Gibsons and Martins.
What was nice is that we would play the guitars for each other (in a bromance way) and so we got to hear them as a player and as an audience. Better still was that neither of us is heads above the other as guitar players. Just a couple of strummers.

You need to remember that the strings on guitars in the stores are generally very old and dead. If you like the feel of the guitar but not so much the sound.....I'd ask for a new set of strings to be put on it.
I would even volunteer to change them for the store..... as long as the store provides them. Convince them that the sound quality is the only thing holding you back from pulling out the cash/plastic.
Play it with new strings. I have a nice Taylor which sounds amazing with new strings. But let them set for a while and it sounds like a cheaper guitar fairly quickly.

Alright Guitarhacker,
I have to say the strings on the Gibson and the Martin were both fine. Perhaps the guitars had sat there for a while but I doubt if anyone ever played them.
What I like about the Martin OM21 is that it can get a deep bass tone and retain a light bright treble tone. The tonal range on the Martin was fantastic.
The Hummingbird was just pants. I've got a mate who was given an acoustic for free that didnt sound too far away from the Gibson. Thats what you get when you go for looks over function.

Rodar, I am also a lefty but I still play right handed guitars. Probably why I sound like I do. It's fun being a lefty though, sometimes in restraunts I eat with one hand and then change over to the other hand to see if anyone notices....they never do but it's still a fun thing to do.

When I were a lad I dreamed of owning either a Gibby Dove or Hummingbird. I thought they was beeyouteeful! Now I can't stand the sight of em. Those pickguards look absolutely kitchy and cheap. But at least now they match the build quality of the guitars.

I played a Gibson Hummingbird back in the 70s I didn't care for it. It is good to know they are keeping up the standards. I had the opportunity to play one of George Jones' two stage Martins about 20 years ago when recording some songs. I thought it played well enough but, for me, the tone was too warm or dark. I used my Takamine instead. I've often wished I had used the Martin just a a bit so I would have the recording of playing such a legend's guitar... but I didn't. J

What a truly fantastic idea!
I'm sure having guitar lessons will make me realise the error of my ways in thinking that £2000 plus guitars really are worth the money lol : )
Naughty me , I am so big headed to even think that anyone could make a £500 acoustic guitar sound almost the same as a £2000 one just by playing it properly : ) Oh whatever next !!!
