Sun Down..My Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot (Rock)
Hey folks, I've had this one kick'in around for awhile. I've tweeked and tweeked and tweeked some more. Big Thanks to my buddy Tony,"Cletis Gonewild" for ripping out some lead guitar work on this. Crit's more than welcome, and if you could tell me what your listening to this on would be very helpful. I've been trying out different headphones, and I think I'm chasing my tail...lol Thanks Kev. http://soundcloud.com/junkyard-carnival/sun-down-m2

Hey, Kev, that is some rippin guitar work. In fact, what I could hear of them, the bass guitar and drums were performed well, too. This song lends itself to a hard rock version, and your arrangement rocked. The one thing that drew my attention the most was the lead vocal. There are some pitch problems that need to be addressed. I don't know if your headphone experiments had anything to do with the vocal, but it sounds like the vocalist couldn't hear very well during tracking. It's not so far off that a pitch correction program couldn't fix this easily. The other thing that drew my attention was the fact that the instruments sounded like they weren't in the same room and they seemed narrowly panned. As noted above, the bass gtr and drums were low in volume compared to the lead gtr. As for the f/x on the vocal, I think it might work if all the instruments are balanced and panned well. The good news is that this is easily fixable, and the song is worth doing well.

Lynn..as always, thanks for the listen and the pointers. I've taken care of the instrument levels and panning. But I also V-Vocal'd this thing to death, which has led me to the decision to redo the vocal trks. Wish me luck. Updated version to come in a week or so. G.Hacker..Thanks for the listen. I've tried talking "Cletis Gonewild" into a band for a year now..the guy has mad skills, and I've almost him talked into it. Thanks again Kev

Hi Kev, I think this may benefit from kind of tearing down and rebuilding your levels. Right now the drums are really buried and your bass guitar is probably louder than it needs to be. If this were me I'd bring all my submixes down, bring up the drums to where they're peaking at about -12db, then slowly add bass guitar so that it sits right, then guitars (being careful to keep your "center" clear with panning and high-passing so they have their own space to live) and finally bring vocals up into the center space you've left with your guitar panning. You also seem to have some excess information at about 150Hz...there are some toms that are ringing there and the bass guitar sounds like it's eating up the headroom in the mix right through that frequency range. I'd probably slap an eq on the bass guitar, put a high pass with a gentle slope on it, pull all the lows out, deal with the upper frequencies so that they sound right then slowly bring back in your low frequencies. To answer your question, I listened through my Focals, then my Avantones and then through some AKGK271s. The 150Hz stuff was most noticeable on the Focals, but that's probably to be expected. Good luck Dean

I listened to this through my twenty dollar headphones from Target and it sounds just fine. Most people who listen to music don't use the higher end equipment. As for the song, I thought it was creative and a different twist on a Gordon Lightfoot song.

" I've tweeked and tweeked and tweeked some more." I hate it when someone is creapin round my back stair :-( Reminds me of that first long night in prison... This was an interesting take on it. that rhythm guitar (to me) feels a little low mid heavy. Maybe keep it and pan it <-----over there, and add a guit with some different processing more highs and a different distortion over there ----> ? and bus them to the Rhythm guit bus? Just a thought.

Cool take on the original. :) Love those guitars. The vocals might need a little touch here and there. I enjoyed it!

Razorwit; Thanks for the listen, and yes I pretty much went back and started over on the levels of the whole thing...stay tuned Pistolpete; Thank you for the listen on the cheapie headphones, it sounds alright on mine too...lol 2 down 1000's to go. Band19; Thats some funny sh!t right there...thanks Janet; Glad you liked it. Vocals still may or may not be totally redone in the near future. Made some copy/paste moves and it's sounding a little better in that department. Trying out some harmonies now, without sounding like "Stewart" from Mad TV..lol

interesting take on a big hit record... it's loud & rude... I'd thin out some of those busy tom fills... otherwise, well done...

Hey, Kev, Very cool rocked up remake of an oldie but goodie, with lots of nice crunchy guitar work, strong rock vocals and some really nice ripping on the guitar solos! Great stuff, buddy, thanks for sharing! Bob
