Take Lanes - What do you think?
The CakeTV Live Webinar barely touched on this. Layers were a pain for sure. Do you think take lanes will mean better comping tools? There is a youtube video showing how comping works in Cubase 6.5 and it looks SO easy to build a composite take. With Sonar, I am cutting and pasting to a new track all the time. Any speculation?

I see take lanes is a big (major?) selling point, but not much was shown on the webinar. Why wouldn't they use it? I don't know about anyone else, but what I would like to be able to do is to have all my takes stay in the order in which they were recorded, first on top, last on bottom. Then allow me to create/insert a layer in that same track (on top or on the bottom) and comp to that new layer and keep all takes in their original order.

I have asked about how input echo monitoring will work with Take Lanes. There was a statement made by Cakewalk that "Take lanes exist outside the track". My immediate reaction to that explanation was to inquire if everything is still routed thru the tracks FX bin so as to facilitate full featured input echo monitoring through my favorite third party VST efx. I am still hoping to get an answer. best regards, mike

I really dislike the way takes are handled in X1 so this is bound to be better. I agree that the takes should stay in order instead of flopping around all over the place. I mean what's up with that? Layers hidden: Last take goes on top, first take goes on the bottom. Layers shown: Same thing. It just doesn't make sense the way it is right now.

I can get by just fine with X1's workflow, but being able to open up the automation lanes in their own track (hopefully with a mapped keybinding) will make my life much easier and make me press CTRL+Z less haha. I am super jazzed for X2. So many whiners on Gearslutz and facebook about really trivial things, but X2 looks to have workflow enhancements. Well worth $100 IMO.
I also wonder about how auto-crossfades are handled while watching the webinar. Maybe a blog to show us?

myconsumerclub hopefully you can R click on a take and audition it with FX. That's a cool idea! If these take lanes are anything like what I've seen in other DAWs the lanes will playback through the main track's output so yo'll get the same FX, levels and pan as the main track. If not, I'd be royaly surprised

In the video it they fold into the track just like automation lanes. So it is most definitely and enhancement over the layers which I use a lot. Very carefully mind you. They have caused me lots of frustration over the years.

I'm excited about Take Lanes. This is what Layers should have been. For comping, I like the way both Cubase and Pro Tools handle this, but with one exception. In Pro Tools you can screw up the order in which takes are presented if you use the old playlist feature to show a different playlist at any point. This actually reorders the takes in the lanes, which is pointless, confusing, and not well planned out on Avid's part. Hopefully in X2 the Take Lanes will either work consistently at a basic level (with minimal comping features included) or with comping features included and done correctly. I'm excited about Take Lanes but would ignore any comping features if they aren't thought out well. Peace, Tunes

I was going to mention Pro Tools but see it's already mentioned. Looking at it quickly, it looks pretty much the same as the Take Lanes in X2. What's different? Or has X2 simply copied Pro Tools (or whoever started it first)? I've never used Pro Tools before, this is just from seeing screenshots.

Along the same lines as Pro Tools, Digital performer has some awsome tools in their version of take lanes. I'm excited that X2 will have this functionality. I don't know who originally developed the concept, but it looks like it has been around for a while.

☄ Helpful
Couple cool things I can tell you guys about Take Lanes ... 1. Their order can be freely reorganized 2. Show/ hide lanes does nothing to the order of said lanes 3. Lanes can be named individually 4. Each lane has a notes section 5. Each lane has its own Edit Filter (handy for showing transients, clip automation, etc. on a per-lane basis) 6. Click on a take and Shift + Spacebar to audition just that clip (with fx since lanes are routed through their parent track) 7. Exclusive solo buttons in each lane (soloing one take mutes the others) Sorry if I missed any questions. What else do you want to know? SP

Layers have long been one of my favorite features in SONAR. I have found them to offer the ability to comp takes together quickly and with great precision. There were 2 improvements that I had hoped Cakewalk would provide for layers. 1) The ability to zoom any single layer vertically for quick inspection. 2) The elimination of the famous "envelope bug disaster" that has existed since layers were introduced a decade or so ago. I've never seen anyone use ProTools to comp a take faster than you can do in SONAR's layers. I've never seen Cubase or Nuendo's take lanes but it seems like I will soon enough. I look forward to learning about SONAR's take lanes yet I can't help but feel frustration to witness that Cakewalk has once again abandoned the improvement of one of it's most original and effective ideas just so it can initiate a latest copy cat feature. I imagine that Layers will become part of Cakewalk's half baking legacy. I think fixing one grossly ignored problem (the clip envelope disaster) and adding one nice zoom feature would have placed SONAR as the fastest comping tool available. I'm having a hard time imagining how anything could be faster than than layers... even as they work now. My guests, all of whom use Pro Tools as their reference for understanding DAW, are always amazed at how fast one can comp layers in SONAR. I'm thinking that at best, take lanes will simply be some sort of new graphical representation of "layers", but at worst the take lanes may end up with fresh new bugs and gotchas that may take another decade or so before this latest idea is abandoned and replaced with another one of some other developers ideas. I keep wondering when Cakewalk will figure out that it's only real competition is with itself and that it's greatest vulnerability is its consistent inability to see an idea through to maturity before it jumps off the train to get on someone else's band wagon. best regards, mike

I'd like to see a demonstration of Take Lanes while comping various takes on a multi track instrument such as all the tracks on a full drum kit. Or, maybe we could see an example of comping tracks from several mics on a multi-mic guitar cabinet(s) recording. Maybe there is some capacity, that I have yet to fully appreciate, for comping multiple tracks efficiently that will make take lanes far more powerful than comping "Layers" across multiple tracks. Maybe? best regards, mike

@mike_mccue - I am in total agreement with you that editing multi-track drums will be the real test of whether the take lanes have been implemented correctly. I'm excited by everything I saw on the demo and by what Seth has added here, but that will be the real test.

My question was more with regard to comping. If I have multiple vocal take lanes, for instance, and I want to you parts of each one, can I easily highlight the parts I want and have Sonar make the composite take. For instance in Cubase, which I don't have, check out from 1:40 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/wa...e=youtube_gdata_player I have been hoping for something like this in Sonar.
