Re-ordering tabs in the Multidock

Hi all

I have a simple question which I can't believe I can't figure out for myself! It's hardly a showstopper, but anyway.... How on earth do you change the order of tabs in the multidock? The manual says you simply drag the current tab to its new position, which does absolutely nothing. I've tried this with all combinations of ctrl, alt and shift but nothing.

I'm using X1 Expanded (64-bit) on win7.

A workaround would be to close out all the tabs and then reintroduce them in the order you want by clicking on the FX or Synths they represent in the track. It's a pain but it would work.

Have you tried it with the multidock floating as well as docked?

Actually a1Mixman gave me a better idea. Just undock the tabs (drag up on the tab until the FX or whatever undocks) and then just drag them back into the multidock in the order you want. Cheers.

I too am befuddled by this. I checked the manual but can't find the reference you speak of. Where did you see it?

So far the above work arounds are the only ways I know of. If so, another feature request will be on the way.

... and regardless of the order you want them in, the Console View will always be the 1st even if it's the last window you dock. Hmmm

I think you need to use a modifier in order to move them (shift/alt/ctrl)

Not sure which and I'm not at my DAW

Thanks everyone for your ideas and suggestions.
Beepster - Looks like your workaround is the only way so far.
A1, I've only tried it docked so far. Will try this tonight when at my DAW as I ran out of time last night.

Steve, I was referring to the full manual which Cake published as a .pdf some time after the initial release of X1. I'll get you the page number tonight. The shorter manual supplied with X1 doesn't  mention it. Strange about the console view; suggestive of a bug?

BJ - I've alreadyv tried every combination of those modifiers, but will try them again in conjunction with AJ's suggestion.

You may have already thought of this: You could use screen sets and place the dock items in a different order in each screen set. That would allow you to flip through different tab arrangements. I agree with you guys, we should be able to drag tabs around.

Re:Re-ordering tabs in the Multidock 2012/09/11 15:29:23 (permalink)
I've tried all the ideas, and:

Beepster - Dragging the tabs out and then back in the desired order doesn't work as it memorises the order they were in originally and snaps them back there. Seems as if you have to close and re-open.

Steve - the quote is from page 976 of the full manual. It says just a single sentence under the heading To Rearrange Tabs, "Drag the currently-selected tab to the left or right in the tabs area."

AJ - Tried it both docked and undocked but makes no difference.

BJ - Tried the modifiers again both docked and undocked but again, makes no difference.

Bluzdog - Your idea would work, but you'd still have to physically close each tab and reopen their respective views or plugs to reorder them for each screenset.

So in conclusion, it seems it can't be done. Feature request for the first X2 update methinks. Unless the first build can do it, that is. Within my cloudy, hazy memory, I'm sure it was possible in 8.5?

Really? That's pretty lame. It's the cumulative quirks like that which make Sonar kind of a pain but there always seems to be a workaround... but still, they should fix this stuff. Maybe in X2 a lot of the nuisances will be gone.

Yep, I've just tried all the usual ways and no joy whatsoever. I thought it might be something to do with having tbas locked, but unlocking them makes zero difference.

True, but you only have to do this once - lock your screensets afterwards

Somehow I missed this pdf. Just dl'd it.

    So...

    To rearrange tabs
Drag the currently-selected tab to the left or right in the tabs area.

Sounds nice. Prob'ly meant to add it in, but it never made it to the final mix cause it don't work as advertised.

BTW, dragging a window out of the multidock and back in to rearrange it doesn't work either. It lands right back in it's original spot. Hopefully X2 fixes this.

I wonder if it's x64 specific.  Could anyone with a 32 bit either Win7 or XP install check?  My XP drive is down right now so I'm 64 bit only at the moment.

The X1 Reference Manual is no longer accurate because X1 has gone through too many updates and changes. It needs to be itself updated.

For the latest information use the help file.

...which is probably why it's not in the help file. Still sounds like a cool feature tho.
