Rain in Vegas

Saw on the news that flash-flooding occurred in Las Vegas due to an abnormal amount of rain.
One of the film clips showed a Jeep Cherokee swamped in the middle of the street.
I thought, oh no, he just bought that car!

I hope everyone in Vegas is OK.  I also hope it wasn't Rain's car.

    Re:Rain in Vegas 2012/09/12 00:21:25 (permalink)

You know what? My wife was taking her driving test at that exact moment the flash floods began (1 pm).

5 minutes after they left the parking, one of the DMV instructors came by and announced to the folks waiting there that they were postponing the road tests for a while due to the bad weather.

But not only is my wife a phenomenal singer, she's a phenomenal driver. She passed that test w/ flying colors.

We left the DMV to go finalize a few details w/ our insurance guy. Should have been a 5 minutes ride but it took forever. There were cars swamped everywhere.

By the time we were done taking care of that business, it was time to get back home, there was traffic jam everywhere. So my wife decided that we should just drop by at Town Square, have supper there and go grab that little pair of Mackies that's on sale and those Auralex pads at Guitar Center.

By the time we were done, things were back to normal.

So I have nothing but positive memories of my first flash flood. :)

Should mention that we didn't see any accident or such - just people waiting in their cars in the middle of the road. I think people here know how dangerous the road gets during flash floods, so people they slow down.

I've seen as bad in the past (even worst) but not in such a short time. Usually it'd take hours, even days...

These pics were taken when we left the DMV, at around 1:45. So that's like 45 minutes worth of rain...

My favorite memories of driving in the rain occurred in Argentina. Their rain water runoff drainage system is nothing like ours here in the US. On a moderate rain, the streets turn to rivers pretty quickly and on a heavy rain... I believe you could white water raft some of them.

All I could think of during that ride that day was...."I'm going to die today"....

Having lived in Vegas for 20+ years (basically grew up there), the flash flooding is no joke....the reason is that Vegas is surrounded by mountain ranges and the city is at the bottom of the valley, so all the water just flows down.

A real bad spot for flooding is on Charleston Blvd. by the Mall in downtown Vegas.......it's basically a "V" and a lot people make the (sometimes grave) mistake of trying to cross it during the flash floods. (Please.....don't even go there Rain.....(unless, you want to be in the news)).

    @Mesh

Thanks for the advice. I think we passed relatively close, but I still don't know the city all that well, so I'm not sure.

The car dealership where we had to finalize a few things is on East Sahara - took forever to get down there from Decatur.

The pics above were taken on Rainbow (south), which looked even worst in terms of flooding but wasn't as bad traffic-wise.

1.8 inchs of rain in just about an hour or two. Wham! It was awesome! You have to know where to be when a flash flood episode hits Vegas, more important, where not to be. Millions of dollars of flood control work have not yet cured Vegas's flash flood problems. I remember whole neighborhoods going down. A lot that has been fixed. Unlees you've lived here a while, you won't have any idea what's about to happen when it starts pouring across the whole Valley. I've nearly been swamped more than once for ignoring the signs.
