New Song: Shop Til You Drop

This is the second time I've recorded with live drums (2 mic set up)in my small basement studio. I recorded live, strumming my guitar while the drummer played. The main thing I was going for was a "live" feel. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated and welcomed! http://marwoodwilliams.ba...rack/shop-til-you-drop

    I love the lyrics of this song-they brought a smile to my face.  All in all, I think you achieved your goal of a live basement recording.  I, too, have experimented in the past with recording drums with minimum miking, and I know it's not easy.  You have done a pretty good job of balancing the instruments, and if you brought them up a few notches to balance with the vocal, it might be a very fine mix.  If not, I still like this song, and I will listen a few more times.  Good job.

    All the best,
    Lynn

    Cool groove throughout. Great theme.

    Backing female vox "aahhhs" in spots could be pitch corrected and eq'd back a little.

    All this needs is a modern production make over, pop style.

    I really enjoyed this overall however, original.

    Definitely a live fill.  Drums sound great for a two mic setup.  I really like the song and the mood you created with the recording.  I haven't heard your stuff before I don't think.  Nice!

    Thanks for the replies and comments!

    Lynn:  Recording live drums with a 2 mics is a challenge.  In this case, I was lucky to have an excellent drummer to record.  I hope to continue working more and more towards capturing a "live vibe."  Because I have a small room, minimal mics will have to do. Besides, a lot of my favorite all-time records used minimal drum microphones.

    Cian and Warren, thanks also for the comments!

    I liked the overall vibe a lot -  sounds a lot like Sheryl Crow's "A change would do you good" . The backing vox (aahhs) sound a bit off.
    Liked the lyric too - very true !

    hey this is rather neato- dig the home-grown setup you are working with to achieve a very cool and viable result.
    if you can swing it, i'd try to double your mic collection and put a 4 mic set up on drums (kick, snare & two overheads) john bonham did wonders w/ that set up.

    song kinda reminds me of War, Cake & Sheryl Crow nicely influencing your own unique style.

    love the album cover! so Joe Walsh "There Goes The Neighborhood"  {image link below}

    Daren, thanks for the comments and the Joe Walsh picture. I have one more song I am mixing with 2 mics on the drum. The next recording I do, I am going to use a 3-mic "Glyn Johns" technique. From there, I will work my way up to using 4 mics.
