Need Best Practice Tips for Migrating Project to new Computer Build -- No Laughing!

Well--don't laugh, but I'm finally going to move Sonar 8 from Windows XP (32-bit) to Windows 7 64-bit. I need the use of the extra RAM for the new NI Modern Drummer and it's about time anyway.

I have a project I've already started and I want to move it over to the new build as well. Here's my setup. I have two physical bootable hard drives. One is XP, where Sonar is now. One is Windows 7 where I want to install Sonar. Both OS drives share a third drive for data, and that is where my Sonar audio and graphics go--I will continue to use this same data drive in the same manner after I migrate Sonar to Windows 7.

Saying this, I don't see that I will need to backup any of the audio files for the move. I just need to point the new instance of Sonar to where the audio files are--right? I'm sure there is something I need to backup for the project, but I'm not sure what, in my above scenario--so I'm hoping you can help.

I'm an IT guy by trade, so don't worry about getting too technical with me--well, ah, unless you want me to re-write Windows at the kernel level! Then I think you'll be going over my head :-p

Anyone that has some experience with this that can help--I really appreciate it. I have enough interruptions with my current project. I don't need more because I botched the migration! That's when I come to the trusty CW forum where the experts are! ;-)

Besides the project data on your separate drive, you might want Sonar's settings. For starters, there are master.ins, cakewalk.ini, ttsseq.ini, and aud.ini. You can export your custom color settings into a file. There are your track template and project template files. There's another file that associates midi ports to external synths ("instr ..." something?). There are your plugin menu layouts; I don't know where. I'm sure there are some settings in the registry, not in files. Screensets and control bar layout, somewhere. Maybe someone has the full recipe??? Also, when you reinstall Sonar, make sure it installs all the plugins you are using in whichever projects you are bringing over. If you have installed previous versions of Sonar, the latest Sonar may not have every plugin that was there in the older versions. Edit: e.g. midi channel presets seem to be in the registry.

Do you only have one copy of each project ??
You mention only the Data drive as being where you save your projects?

If you haven't already done this... best to do a "save as" to an external drive of all your work.
Check the "copy audio" with folder tab.

If your not re Formatting the OS drive then nothing will be lost.
You'll just get warnings about your plug ins when you first load the 32 bit projects into 64 bit Sonar. For me all of them worked, I use mostly the stock plug ins but even a few 3rd party's worked fine.

Hey thanks to both of you.

My Cakewalk Project Folders, and per project folders are on the same DATA drive as the audio files. I'm guessing I should be able to just open them up in the new location of Sonar. I've been installing hardware drivers, editing software, mastering software, plug-ins, soft synth, etc. etc. I'm pooped. I'll have to continue tomorrow, and I plan on installing Sonar last.
