What to do with a son that's hogging your bandwidth?
Usually it's not that big of a deal with our shared wireless router, when my son is playing his online video games, using Skype, downloading files (all at the same time), I see my download speed drop from a respectable 900KB/sec down to 400 or even lower. I started off with the X2 downloads at about 800 KB/sec, and then.....my son got on his computer, and my speeds are fluctuating between 300-500. Should I: A: accidentally smash his computer to bits? B: accidentally lock him out of the house until my download is complete? C: tell him if he doesn't get off the computer I'll never buy him a new game for the rest of his life? The problem is, is his gaming activities are as important to him as my music activites are to me. If only this download was available at 3:00 am last night. BAH! Been at it for almost two hours and am just now starting on part 3 of 4. I'm just glad my wife hasn't started watching movies online yet!!! Oh the agony!

I'd take the whole wireless for myself exclusively and give him only a dial-up connection... This will cure him from gaming whole day

I know on some routers there's the ability to assign bandwidth limits to each computer using it. It has something to do with the QoS. But I've yet to figure out how to make that work to my advantage on this router.

You're lucky, it's a good day with a following wind if I can get 200 kbs here, even with nothing else going on. As regards to your son, block him on the router and tell him there seems to be a problem with the internet until you've got your download. Kids generally though are smarter than the parents with these things so be careful with this suggestion.

you could always set the router to allow only your computer to even connect until you're done with the DL and then reset it after. magickly the internet for his computer seems to be working again! oh - and JB says it before I did...

He was learning his alphabet on my computer (With his stupid Barney software) when he was like 2 or 3 years old. And I don't think he's been off the computer ever since. And besides he already knows I'm downloading this program, and I told him specifically not to start any downloads on his computer, that would really put my speed in the dumps. As it stand right now, he's just playing a Steam online game and my download speeds aren't so bad.

It's okay, I'm done with the download. And besides living arrangements are due to change in the very near future. (Moving soon minus one female member of the family....if you get my drift) Hopefully my new residence will have better/faster Internet service to deal with both my and my son's needs

Not saying what you should do but I can tell ya what I did... I asked my grand daughter to get off-line for the evening as I had big files to download ... She did and I downloaded the stuff and let her know when I was done. All she said was, "Ok"...and when I was done..."Ok, thank you". Now I feel very much like those creeps that when you're having trouble with something they get in the thread just to tell ya they didn't have any problems and it works just fine for them....jerks. Hope I'm not falling into the same.
