I ate lunch with Michael Symon today.
I had a fun day working for ESPN College Game Day as a sound tech today.
We were part of the local guys they add to their traveling road crew. The show has grown in to a gargantuan circus with lots and lots of gear.
We also had a bunch of local friends working on an episode for a cooking theme TV show called "the Chew" who were video taping the guys that cook meals for the Game Day crew. Some of the truck drivers for ESPN started doing a Game Day tail gate and it has expanded into a mega meal with gourmet meats prepared in lots of different ways.
So, anyways, when the food break was called me and my camera friend waited a while to let the road guys get a good meal and then we made some massive plates of great food and found a quiet table in the portable tent they set up for us.
We're sitting there and I'm enjoying an incredible spinach salad and an awesome fresh fruit salad when Michael Symon, one of the stars of the show, and Tommy, the ESPN barbeque chef, walk up and say
"mind if we sit here?". They are being followed by 3 cameras and they start to tape a sequence at our 4 top table. They go through their banter while we try to act like it's nothing and just keep eating.
Then Tommy who is wearing a bratwurst shaped hat, and Michael, who is wearing a T-shirt that says "eat more meat", look over and one of them starts to ask me how I like it when they both realize there is no meat on my plate. Tommy says
"look at this guy, he's eating healthy" and I quickly reply
"yeah... this salad tastes great".
Then we all smiled as we realized that the one vegetarian in a crew of nearly 100 workers may have just got *outed* on National TV.
I have to say... the prime rib, the baked salmon, the gargantuan shrimp, the bratwurst, and the massive scallops looked like they were prepared to perfection.
I'm hoping we make the cut just so I can have some fun watching it.
Good times.
Good food.
:-)
best regards,
mike
