Recording yourself in another room with monitor and keyboard

(SONAR X1)
I have a remote monitor/keyboard/mouse in another room so I can record myself.   My old setup had a simple remote with basic functions for doing this.   I'm trying to use mostly my keyboard and using hot keys to record myself as seems to be easier to control while holding violin/bow, etc..   My main issues are:

1.  Rewind/Fast Forward - is there a hotkey for this?  (for now i'm using markers and the hotkeys to cycle through them)
2.  Muting the previous take(layer).

I know I could setup auto punch, but I prefer to not use this method, nor the loop puch method.  I generally prefer to record till I mess up, rewind to just before the mistake, then continue.

Are there any remote control usb devices that are tailored to this purpose?

If you record yourself, what is your preffered method?  I'm looking for ideas.

Thanks,
Martin

I too do a lot of recording by myself...acting as musician and engineer at the same time.

This is why I've been reluctant to give up using my Alesis HD24 for tracking.  I can control the machine in my studio room with a separate BRC while everything else is in the control room.  I can see the SMPTE time, do auto punch in/out, etc with the BRC....then transfer the tracks to my DAW and mix in Sonar.

I use an iPad ....there are applications that make an iPad or iPhone or smart phone on the android ..  Become a wireless controller

The app I use is called   V control .... http://www.neyrinck.com/en/products/v-control-pro

I record playing drums in the garage .. And starting and stopping is a breeze

Ac core 7 is also a popular and cheaper controller .... http://www.saitarasoftware.com/site/AC-7_Core.html

There is also a transport ....http://www.frontierdesign...ducts/TranzPort.

Which is hard ware and does the same thing ... I think they are discontinued but still ok eBay and I be seen them at guitar centers around chcago
