X2 BIG Latency (Not A Problem In X1) *SOLVED*

Hi guys. I'm confident it is a setting I have forgotten to change but when I load a project in X2 the latency is really bad, even on playback let alone recording.
In X1 I have NO problems with this latency (even during recording) using the exact same project.

Any ideas?

Cheers guys, I've done all of the 'obvious' stuff such as switching to ASIO etc.
I'm using a TASCAM US-1641

Like I say I have no problems in X1 (just double checked again) so it must be a setting if no-one else is experiencing it?

I've tried changing to different latency settings in preferences but nothing changed.
My total roundtrip is apparently only 15ms but its actually a lot closer to one whole second.

Is this in a project with plug-ins already?  Somebody else experienced delay on input and we determined that it was Plug-in Delay Compensation as the culprit.  Worth trying:  http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=2668712

Also, try "Reset Config to Defaults" in the Configuration File section in Preferences.

Is there a "Best Practice" setting for "Driver Mode"?  I know a lot of it depends on drivers used, but are there recommended settings for ASIO vs MME.  Those are the two I use the most, depending on whether I have my TASCAM US-1800 hooked up or not.  Would love to hear a recommendation for an ASIO sound card.  Then I wouldn't use MME at all.  One thing I have learned over the years it not to "Share Drivers With Other Programs".  One of my goals is to use X2 not only in the studio, but also in live gig situations whether it be standalone or hybrid with my other devices (i.e. compressors, FX, EQ, etc.). I found that in X1, dragging an effect on a vocal strip for example, would introduce a fair amount of latency. That was also using a laptop that I feel may have been under powered for the job. I would sure love not to drag my 32-channel board around to all the venues and just use X2.  I have improved my hardware quite bit (see signature) so X2 should handle the task at hand.  Appreciate any comments/suggestions.

In X2, make sure you set up your Driver Mode and buffer settings the same as you have them in X1.  You can run the two side-by-side.  Go back and forth between the two and check Edit > Preferences (Or type P).  The stuff important to your issue will be found in the Audio sections, near the top.

If this is not possible/easy for you.  Try just applying different Driver Modes in the "Playback and Recording" section.

Unfortunately, no.  There is no "best practice" for a driver mode setting (if there was, believe us, we'd set it that way FOR everyone).  You'll just need to check each out and make your own call.  We do know what we've seen to be the best option, in our experience (both personal and from taking support calls).  We post these settings here:  https://cakewalk.com/Support/hwsetup.aspx 


I'd like to offer a recommendation on an interface, but a lot goes into the decision.  How many ins/outs you need is a big one, for example.  In my experience, my two favorites have been the MOTU 828 (but it has been years since I've used one - it was on XP) and the RME Fireface800.  I recommend starting a new thread asking the question and explaining your requirements.  I'm sure a lot of folks will have great advice and opinions on the topic.

Thanks Bill, Appreciate the feedback.  I'm happy with my TASCAM US-1800.  Gives me all the channels I will need.  I will look around for a sound card that supports ASIO.  I'd like to stay on ASIO drivers all the time since they are very low latency.

With the Delta, you'll probably get better results using ASIO mode.  Then set the buffer size by clicking the ASIO Panel button (SONAR can't set them in ASIO - needs to be done on the hardware control software).

If that doesn't help, try all of the suggestions listed in post #7.

OK!!  I fixed the latency.  Here is what I did and no I have no idea how I got there!

I looked in the task manager and the computer was not running ASIO and that is why the ASIO button was not working.

opened sonar X2
went to preferences and deselected all the maudio i/o's.
selected mobo on board sound and ASIO engine started.
opened ASIO from task bar
selected all maudio i/o's in ASIO panel
deselected mobo on board sound in ASIO panel
closed ASIO panel
went back to preferences
deselected mobo on board sound in preferences
selected all maudio i/o's in preferences
applied settings.
IT WORKED!

Now I am back to the same issue that I had when I upgraded to X1.  I get drop outs now and then and CPU spikes.  At least I fixed my latency issue.
