Take lane comping
Can anyone who has recorded multi-miced instruments (drums, guitar cabs, bass cab + di, etc etc) please outline how they utilize take lanes??
I truly enjoy how they are less "cluttered"... but when I have more than one take of a dynamic performance and need to crossfade rather than cut right on a beat, I can't unless I am moving clips physically. This makes it even harder.
I am surely missing a key piece of workflow because everyone seems to love take lanes.

First I use clip grouping on the various takes so edits affect all takes. I am usually but not always comping takes together as well. To do that I use either the mute tool to isolate the take I want or split clips and then use the "Fade clips" option. Which really depends on material, isolating works better with distinct gaps in the material such as vocal phrases whereas Fade clips works better on continuous material. I usually delete the unwanted part of the clip but you can just select those that you want to use and then "fade clips" Search "Clip groups" "Mute tool" and "Fade clips" in the help file This video may help explain the mute tool a little better.

Cool video for sure, but my workflow's a bit different. I just used the slice tool to crop clips and CTRL dragged them vertically to do the auto-crossfades. I guess I could actually do that with take lanes now that I think of it.
Make a composite lane and drag the clips I want to use to that lane. But I can see it being a real mess if I ever wanted to, say, go back and re-evaluate the quick edits I did while tracking.
I've never used the mute tool to be honest. I've always dont the slice, crop, fade thing. Especially for drums/guitar.
I think I'll just need to get used to get used to take lanes and a new workflow... I just wish there was a quick, mouse-ready way to crossfade between two clips in the selected area I've highlighted. There may be, but I'm dim and don't know how to search the online documentation.

If you haven't watched the Webinar video and Seth's recent "what's new" video, you should. I remember both of them showing information about take lanes and comping... Best, Rob

Watched both. Unless I'm missing something, people seem to utilize the mute tool a lot, or split clips and not have to crossfade. I use the crossfades a lot and they are not always on "beat".

fooman Watched both. Unless I'm missing something, people seem to utilize the mute tool a lot, or split clips and not have to crossfade. I use the crossfades a lot and they are not always on "beat". The other method I use is splitting clips and then use the "Fade clips" command (TV Menu-->Clips-->Fade Clips), that will do what you want. As long as you don't bounce or apply trimming to the clips first. I don't have a video on youtube for it but it is part of the Complete Sonar X2 if you have that. Failing that search the help file for "Fade Clips" for a full explanation but I'm sure that will do what you are looking to achieve. It basically creates a cross fade between the clips but better still will actually fill gaps between them as well. All user controllable of course. HTH
