Independence Relaunch
I just spotted the announcement over on KVR "Magix has announced that the complete line of "Independence" products including the sampler and a wide range of plugins (formerly yellow tools) is now available at the MAGIX Pro website." http://pro.magix.com/en/independence/functions.1015.html I wonder how this is going to turn out? It would be nice to see some development but it's a long way behind Kontakt (and Mach Five) now in terms of scripting and third part content. I see they are still offering the Pro version and a basic version for those who do not want to pay for the full library, I think a lot of people would like to see NI take that approach with Kontakt. But it does not look like you can buy the individual instrument sets any longer. It's certainly a nice intuitive sampler to use if you want to map out your own samples and are not into scripting. The Factory library is still useful, not state of the art but solid, usable sounds, particularly the Kirk Hunter Orchestral stuff, the Candy Saxes and the Majestic Basses. All of which IMHO beat the corresponding stuff in the Kontakt library. I also wonder what support will be like for existing users? An encouraging sign is my Yellowtools account log on gets me onto the Samplitude Service Centre and I can see my Yellowtools products, with download and create new activation links. Oh - and the free version is well worth grabbing if you do not have it already.

Looks like there is a new version of the Engine (3.1) so that will be the first acid test. I will not be able to try it until the middle of next week.

Somehow glad that Independence didn't just fall off the face of earth. Though I doubt they're in a position to take over the market.

The sound has always been good and the free edition is a good edition for freebie hunters. I think they need to overhaul the GUI. The browser is rubbish and trying to work out how to do things isn't intuitive. I couldn't find the answers on how to do certain things anywhere. People asked similar questions and there was tumbleweed all over the internet including their forum. Plus the install was nightmare for some and they couldn't work out why it affected many and not others. It's never a good sign when people are posting workarounds on how to install the product - such as loading it onto another computer and then copying across because the installler didn't work on all PCs!

Glyn Thanks for this - I just went and checked my account - all there but different! I had Majestic, Culture and Candy, now I seem to have the World Library, Acoustic and Electric Basses plus Saxophone and Brass!!! I wonder if they have just renamed the libraries or they are different? Further investigation needed I feel. Nigel

I have never installed/used Independence before, and although this bit of info is good to know, I'm sure my older system will be more than receptive/compatible with their line. (Deciding on whether it's worth taking up Striking's "Installation Challenge")

Bajan, they were always part of the full installation. I can't remember the original downloads exactly except there was a lot of them and it took a while.

they aren't offering a crossgrade which might draw away some kontakt customers perhaps.. but it's just like the 80's and 90's where the akai "s" samplers pretty much ruled the roost.. if they can get some killer functions that nothing else has then they can change the user base a bit.. but unless NI REALLY mess up , I can't seen folk changing from pretty much the industry standard.

I had the free version, but it was as you say a "nightmare" to install and gave me trouble. Was not worth it, so I removed it last year. Does the new version new engine come with the Independence Free? If so, it might be worth taking a look/listen again.

Glyn, You can buy the individual instruments as well, look a little deeper into the independence section and they are there. I'm really excited that it's getting a new launch by Magix. Basically the whole Independence line is re-offered and I think it has a far more use full approach in that it can host other VST intsruments internally. There is a new 3.1 software launch and I hope there are updates to it's mixer GUI. Other than that I think it looks just fine. The effects and mixer sections are far better than Kontakt. Personally I can't stand the NI interface - though the scripting is impressive.

Ok an update - I had email correspondence with Magix - they were very helpful and prompt. The libraries I had, Majestic, Candy and Culture are now the World Library, Acoustic and Electric Basses plus Saxophone and Brass but with some additions. They suggested downloading the sampler update and at the same time the new versions of the libraries. Now these are big libraries (9 gb, 8 gb and 7gb I think!) but the nice thing is they come with a very efficient download and installation manager. The sampler itself now comes with a large Free library as well. So all in all a very positive experience. Just finished downloading and installing - shall get playing with the sampler tomorrow I hope Seems like they might be serious about keeping this product and pushing it - can only be good to have some more competition for our "friends" at NI! Now that Independence Free has a new engine, I will try it out again; perhaps it will be worth the effort this time. I am interested in the Pro version which seems to come with all the available instruments. If the Free version is stable and usable, then I would consider getting the Pro. Once question: As a sampler, can it read different sample formats like Kontakt does, or is it limited to reading its own proprietary libraries?

That last experience with Independence Free a few years ago left a bad taste that lingers still.

I got it downloaded and installed. That went pretty smooth with their new installer, which installs the program and library in several files and does them one-by-one, one at time. My only complaint so far is that I can't find the downloaded files. I was hoping to install it on my office computer as well as the studio and did not want to have to download it twice. Once the installer downloads, it automatically installs the downloaded files, but when finished, I can't find the location of the actual downloaded files to copy over to a flash drive to take to the other computer. The installed files are easily located, but the location of the actual downloaded files remains a mystery. Worse case scenario is that I just download to the other computer the new engine (which is the first of the downloads and luckily there are check boxes to select or deselect which files to download), and then copy the installed library over to a flash drive to then take it to the other computer. I will play with it tomorrow and see if all of this is worth the effort.

Cecelius When you've finished downloading and before installation, there is a selection for choosing where to install. If you don't choose / change this it appears to have a default install location something like c\ programs\magix\ independence libraries (or something close to that) You could also just do a search for any .ytif files. Once you found out where you put them you open the sampler and go to "add libraries" obviously navigating to where you installed them. Once added, when you go to use them for the first time you will need to re-register them. Hope this helps Nigel

Cecelius A correction. You will need to register the Independence 3.1 software - the libraries are OK One thing there are a couple of new items, Pop Brass and Trumpet and Soundtrack Percussion 1 & 2 that do seem to need registering but I don't have a serial number for these (well I don't think so!) I have dropped Magix an email and shall come back when I have an answer I have just had a little play with the new Independence software and the free libraries - some nice stuff included here from what I've heard so far - effects seem nice as well and of course best thing of all - its FREE!! Don't worry about the updates, Mesh. Not many PCs have exploded since installation. Only 26%. Think lucky and you'll be ok.

I do know where the engine and the library are installed. What I can not find is where the downloaded (uninstalled) files are located; usually these go to my download folder, but with this product I can not find the downloads. I want to copy these uninstalled files and take them to my studio and install them there without having to go through the process of download almost 3 gigs again. Any clue as to where the downloads are stored? Nevermind. I just found them. They stored their downloads in my "document" directory, under Magix downloads. I had been looking in my download directory. So now I will just copy them to a flash drive and install them in the other computer.

Final update - the new replacement libraries actually have a fair bit of new stuff in them - this is all free as well- You just have to re-register with the new serial number they give you. Had contact with Magix support a fwe time lately and have always received very quick, polite and helpful replies. The Sampler engine seems to be quite mature and very useable. Have not really explored it enough to see if you can use different formats - I think the answer to this will be no. Otherwise I can see me using this often and I shall be on the look out for what they release in the future library wise Nigel
