Uncle Ruckel Band - Bertha

http://soundcloud.com/john-vere/johnny-bertha

We recorded these songs spring 2010, I have been picking away at them when I get a chance.  I did a crappy job of recording Dave's drums so had to get out the turd Polish etc.
Mostly the snare was very dark and the Kick just didn't kick.
So I eq'd the snot out of the snare and I replaced the kick via audio snap and MIDI. ( modified TTs-1)
Most of this is very unaltered technically speaking. It's 75% live, no quantisizing or pitch correction etc,  Little compression, little verb and delay.
I think I've tracked 3 guitars , the lead is using a Mutron auto wha.
I'm not a great keyboard player so the Mr Tramp and the TTs-1  Organ3 might be a little buried.

There are 10 songs total for the album and I'm just at that final mix stage and looking for comments from you wonderfully endowed with " good ears" folks out there in forum land.
I'll post them as they come off the assembly line over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks ever so much for all your help with learning this crazy software, It took 3 years but I think I'm on it now! I can sell my 8 track!

Ha!  I still have my Tascam 8 track in the corner of my room.  Anyway, this was a  lot of fun to listen to.  It's a little light on bass, but the rest of the mix sounds organic enough that one might think it was recorded on tape.  I like the lyrics and vocal of this song.  All the work you put into this seems to have paid off.

    All the best,

Thanks Lynn, That's the stuff I'm looking for, I haven't "proofed" it on any more than my studio monitor's which are world famous for low bass output ,, and my internet office computer which is home stereo with some Mission Speakers that are the opposite of the NSM10's and are bass ridiculous.
I'll try a re mix with moving my Hi pass filter down a tiny bit. Bass is always finicky.

Careful, listen in the car, on the home stereo and wherever you can.  My monitors are good and a flat response and I hear plenty of bass.  You need to listen on different systems.  I just listened on my Sennheiser phones and plenty of bass there too.  I'm a bass player (at least that's my favorite instrument) and believe me I'm never afraid to ask for more bass.  I just don't think this needs it.  It's a good recording.  Your players are very good.

Hey thanks Warren, , I was pondering this as I did end up trying the different systems ( I always do) and yes I found the bass was about right. I think I'll bring the organ in and out a little more.
Love your tunes too, good stuff...

Cool tunes... great musicians... I'd love to hear this band live... I listened to the first two songs so far... I think the kick could come up a bit on the 1st tune... I hear the kick ok on the 2nd song...  bass sounds balanced... nice work...

Thanks for the comment, Yes the kick was a problem from get go, I'll check and I bet the first song is one that I didn't replace the kick with a MIDI track. No matter how much I screw around with an audio kick track, it's easier and sounds better to me to use a sampled kick.

Sounds good to me , sounds like an old band I use to play drums in back in the late 80's .

Thanks for the possitive  Fox,  I guess my age shows!! I certainly don't try and sound like anything in particular, I guess I certainly don't try and sound modern!
The Uncle Ruckel Band was to forcus on being anything but a typical top 40's band. I tryed to mix originals with B sides for the 60's. But then we would find new songs we liked like "The Way" by Fastball.

Any how I have 5 Uncle Songs mastered now and have posted them there so my Band mates can proof them, your all welcome to comment on any of them. I listened in the car yesterday and find the vocals are up and down compairing each song.
