OK to Install Acronis True Image 2013 on my DAW Workstation?

I want to image my system drive (Win 7 64bit) and thinking of using Acronis True Image 2013.  I do not connect this to the Internet and have no firewall or anti-virus software on my system.  I try to keep it as clean and purely dedicated just to music as possible.  Should I be concerned with Acronis installing stuff that adds overhead to the system and decreases performance.

I'm also wondering if I could simply run an image backup using a program file installed to USB stick (so I don't have to install anything onto my my system disk).

Any thoughts on how to best do image file backups of my main DAW system drive would be most appreciated.

I have 2012 running on my off-line machine - no issues.
For images, I have it set up to send them to my D: drive.

I suppose I'll dump them to an external drive if I needed to clean up some space.

I'm another Acronis user although it's 2011 on my DAW. I have 2012 but only on my laptop. No particular reason other than I'm only paying for one 2012 license.

I have 2011 on my system. Just make sure you don't activate the "real time" backup, because that WILL hog your resources like a boss. All mine does is an incremental backup of system & data, upon shutdown.

I own Acronis 2011, but never even loaded it on my system. It installs too much bloatware and things you'll never use in a million years, and some things you should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking of trying to use!

It comes with two versions ... a Windows version and an emergency boot disc version that has a weird DOS like menu that you can use a mouse with. That's what I use.

I made the emergency boot disc, and created an image using it's utility and saved the image directly to an external USB drive, so I never even had to install the Windows version.

I've never trusted images of Windows that were made while Windows was running ...

If your trying to save some money and find some place to get the 2011 version, make sure you download the latest update for it. Upon release there was a bug that didn't allow 2011 to see external USB drives. You have to log in to your account and download the latest update for 2011 to be able to see external USB HDD's and Thumb drives. I'm sure it's fixed in the 2013 version though, I would think ...

Good luck! Acronis is a great program. I was reading that Windows 8 users have to upgrade to 2013 ... iirc. Another thing to consider.

I use 2012 without issues. I keep a combination of disc images and file backups on external hard drives and run them manually.

I currently use ATI 2011 build 6942 which works rather well, but with an occasional crash.

As for ATI 2012, I don't think much of it:
    ATI 2012: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/24120#comment-74697

And for ATI 2013, the verdict is out:
    ATI 2013: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/35152

Mainly - I trust Retrospect - I use them both.

If you want more details email me and I will oblige.

No, as you can disable all Acronis services when not in use. You can also skip loading corresponding Acronis "sys" files with the help of SysInternals "Autoruns" utility. I use Acronis 2012 on a Win 7 Pro (x64) audio system only and am using the above method.

You can also get these hardware boxes now for cheap that can have 2 drives in them, connect it via esata and stick 2 identical drive in there, one is your main drive, the other just an empty identical drive, then just hit the clone button and it clones one drive to the other, don't even need to have the machine on.

The latest generation of HD docking stations (USB3 and eSATA) have the ability to clone a HD.
Many eSATA controllers are SATA-II.  If you have a good USB3 controller, you can get a USB3 HD docking station that holds two drives... and can run in RAID-0.  Put a pair of fast 1TB HDs in it... and that'll net you 260+MB/Sec.

I have True Image 2013 installed.  It is not interferring with Sonar (or anything else).   I don't have the try and decide or other options enabled.  I just use the basic full hard drive backups (no incremental).

Not seen any but haven't been looking much, there's some but they are for larger IT stuff and pretty expensive.

I have a closet with ventilation where I keep my satelite pc's and external drives so it doesn't need to be tidy, just shut the door, out of sight out of mind :D

If you look at the error rate, say, on the Seagate Barracuda, for example, it lists as one read error in 10 to the 14 power reads - that is 100 terabBITs or about 12 TeraBYTEs.

I have 6 drives each is 2 TB, so I probably have a few bit errors here and there.

I made a shell script using md5deep that will go through my drives and create an MD5 database (checksum) of all the files on the drive. It takes a while to run, but I do it now and then. It does several things - makes me feel a bit more secure that nothing changed and it also makes sure that every file is still readable.

Here is that script if anyone want it, you will need to download md5deep and make some path and text changes in the script for your machine.

I also mod the registry to provide a right-click property for the drives:

    Regedit:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\MD5 Hash Drive\command]
    @="runas /profile /user:Administrator \"cmd.exe /k \\\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\md5deep\\md5-hash-drive.bat\\\" %1"

    md5-hash-drive.bat:

I combined all my MD5Deep programming resources and documents in one spot.
Download and extract the zip file then read the ReadMe.txt file for instructions on usage.

You can search for md5deep and download it, it is free and very good to have.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread, but I think these tools are really useful.

I agree with Bub--I have version 2010 installed, and it was a resource hog. It was very difficult to disable its real-time backups (a disaster for a DAW), and I had to go into Windows administration control panel to manually disable the various services Acronis had installed. For my regular use, I'm using Windows Backup running once a week. I did find Acronis indispensable when I originally swapped out my RAID 0 boot disk for a Crucial SSD (that was a few years back). The Acronis clone function allowed me to reproduce everything from the RAID array on the SSD, without having to reinstall or re-register all the software.

One day, when I have the time, I will learn how to use all the features of Cakewalk 2.0. Oh, wait, Sonar 8.5. What did you say? Sonar version what?

I too have Acronis True Image 2013 installed with no issues.

I have True Image 2013 installed.  It is not interferring with Sonar (or anything else).   I don't have the try and decide or other options enabled.  I just use the basic full hard drive backups (no incremental).
