Metal Gear theme try out
Hello! This is my first post to this section. I was jamming a bit with the looper of Axe fx Ultra and decided to give this a try. It's a cover of the Metal Gear theme. All is recorded with Sonar X1 using Axe fx Ultra and drums are from Ezdrummer / Metal Machine. Nothing special really but all comments are welcome. Someone already commented at the fractal forum that the mix has a little boxiness. I'm quite a newbie at mixing techinques so any thoughts or comments might come in handy. :) http://soundcloud.com/joehans/metal-gear-theme

Nice playing. The tone sounds pretty nice... Boxiness is usually from a midrange frequency being too prominate. I noticed that the bass was a bit low....but to me, overall, the mix is not too boxy sounding on this computer .... not as boxy as some I have heard. If you are new to mixing I'll simply say you are off to a good start and perfecting a mix takes a bit of time to learn the techniques and get them applied to your work on a consistent basis. Post a few more examples of your work here and people will comment and provide you the details needed to help you dial in that mix.

Thanks for the complements. Well I'm not exactly a total newbie since I've been doing home recordings for many years now. I've just never dug below the surface in the world of mixing. I try to put something together and post here.

The mix sounds good to me. Needs a bit more bass. The guitars sound really good.

A touch more bass and you're good to go. Nice playing altogether.

Hi Joe- I thought your tone sounded good. I also like the melody in the bridge. Maybe others will chime in on this, but I think SoundCloud is not the best host for having others provide feedback. I fell that the conversion they use makes everyone's (not just yours) sound sharper and tinnier that normal. Thus, trying to evaluate the bass is pretty hard. So, the thing that stands out most is the guitar tone, and I liked it. The melodic line in the bridge could probably stand out a bit more for me, as it is pretty cool.

I love it. The Bass needs to be turned up though. As said by many. Certainly not boxy. I think the EQs on the drums might need a tweek, or if you can, just bring the kick volume up.
