My tracks wont pan?????

I have noticed a strange problem lately. My tracks wont pan. When tracking instruments or vocals I select the input, usually the left in, so that the recording is in mono.

On playback the two bars of the vu meter indicate normally, but on panning to the right the left bars disappear while the right side remains active, but the sound disappears until panned back to centre.

This can't be normal? Surely panning a mono track will place it to either left or right. Am I missing something here?

Are you sure its a mono track? That's behaving like a mono source being recorded onto a stereo track. Can you post a screen shot?

Check the "Interleave" setting, and make sure it's set to "Stereo" and not "Mono"

Maybe you recorded it in stereo and the audio is on one side of the stereo track, hence no sound when panning to a side.
This is what it looks like to me.

Well, what a revelation. I had no idea of what the "Interleave" setting was for, and so left it alone. Now I have done some experimental tracking with and without "Interleave", but the track still sits in the middle.

I went back and listened to some previous recordings I had done, and have discovered that they too seem to be predominantly centre, yet the mixes sound full and seperated.

I have read a lot that if your mixes sound good in mono then you are on track to a good mix. As you've already guessed I am still pretty much a novice.

So now I am confused. How do I record a track so that I can later position it left or right in the mix? And, I'm still not sure of what the "Interleave" button is about. As stated earlier, it doesn't seem to have much effect. I have searched the manual, but that presupposes that you aready know its function.
