Once and For All On Offset Mode
After all the discussions, I still have no idea how to tell whether or not I am in that g**d*** Offset mode. I can touch O and then touch it again and there is nothing obvious on the screen tro indicate what's going on. I cannot believe there is not some way to know whether or not the stupid thing is on or off. This is a horrible design. If anyone can offer a simple tip, i will be in his/her debt. By the way, what started th discussion originally is what is happening again. Track without automation is playing fiarly strong. I click Write on on the track, the fader jumps up, but the singal is quieter than it was before. Someone said something about offset, but this makes no sense. Why would turning Write on radically lower the volume of the track in relation to the fader position?

Konradh: You don't see a little plus sign + that appears? When you go into offset mode, all your faders, busses, effects sends etc, should read 0 dB with a +. The plus is what tells you you're in offset mode. The plus should appear in every window on everything that can be adjusted in off-set mode. If you are not seeing that, try expanding your project window outward a bit. You may have things too tight to where the plus may not be visible. Hope this helps. -Danny

There's also a button in the Control Bar that turns blue when Offset Mode is on, and turns gray when its off ... SP

Seth Perlstein [Cakewalk ] There's also a button in the Control Bar that turns blue when Offset Mode is on, and turns gray when its off ... SP And this is one of the many "small" changes that makes X2 a very good uppdate.

konradh Thanks, guys. I will work with it. FYI, I am still on X1. You should see the same thing in all Sonar versions other than the thing Seth mentioned. That blue light/grey light only happens in X2. :) -Danny

I'm glad I don't know what offset mode is cos this would drive me round the bend. In fact I might re-assign my "O" button to do something else entirely.

When you turn offset mode on, it puts the little plus sign that Danny posted a screenshot of on the Volume and Pan controls on each track in track view as well .. I mentioned it in case you don't use Console view ...

OK, in Track view, when I press O, in one track I see a plus sign go off and on in the horizontal area that shows the fader level. This does not happen for all tracks. The odd thing is that when I see the plus sign, the value goes to -4.5; when I don't see the +, the value goes to 0 db. This leads to three questions: 1-Is Offset mode only for the selected track(s) or for all tracks? I am thinking only selected. 2-Does + sign mean Offset = On. The fader value I see seems to be backwards. I would expect offset mode to default to 0 and then the user would adjust from there. 3-Is there any way to disable this mode? It is really screwing up my mixes. I appreciate your guys helping me out. I am not sure if I am dumb, Offset mode is confusing, or both. Thanks. PS Bob, You are right: I don't use Console view because I use a VS-700; but the picture Danny posted was still very helpful.

I have found offset mode to be an absolute lifesaver in real world mix conditions...yet I was mystified about if for years.
Please listen to my band's new (post-prog rock?!) songs at www.reclaimmusic.com all produced using sonar X1!!

Offset Mode impacts all tracks, making their automatable parameters offsett-able from their true value. 2. When the plus is visible, Offset Mode is on. It should default to 0. The parameter may have been previously adjusted while in offset mode by accident. 3. No, you cannot disable it or make it entirely unavailable. You can just avoid getting into the mode. One way to help avoid it would be to map your O key to "Do Nothing" in Preferences.

Bill J, Thanks very much. I will assume (hopefully correctly) that the + only appears in the selected track, even if all are affected. That is the only explanation I can come up with that seems to fit what I see. I completely understand how this is a good and useful feature but, for me, it is a little too easy to invoke by mistake so I will remap the O to do nothing or fix me a drink or something. Thanks again.
