The X2 manual is awful!
I really have to say this. It's chock full of errors. Very sloppy, Cakewalk! I'm currently going through the staff view tutorial and there are multiple errors on virtually every page. I vowed to keep a list of errata as I went through it, to send to Cakewalk, but it looks like I'm just stopping every couple of minutes to write up a new one. Nothing works like they say it should, with regard to selecting and adding notes with the smart tool via the freehand/select tools. Boy I cannot wait for Scott to finish Sonar X2 Power!

It's ridiculous! I've never used the staff view before, and I was hoping to get the basics down from the manual. Consider their instructions for altering the duration of a note: 4. Do one of the following: • With the Edit tool , position the pointer over the note’s start or end point, then drag left/ right to adjust the start/end position. • With the Smart tool , position the pointer over the note’s start or end point, then drag left/ right to adjust the start/end position. You can also double-click the note to open the Note Properties dialog box, then enter in the number of ticks you want for the note duration. Neither of these things do anything in the staff view. It's as if they've just copied and pasted the instructions for altering note durations in the piano roll view.

From what I'm seeing here, the only thing that's wrong is the double-click to open Note Properties, but you can right-click to get to that particular dialog. Clicking & dragging works perfectly

It's an online manual. So it should be quite easy to report an error. And I'm quite sure Cakewalk will follow up shortly. I for one really am happy with this. Now that I own X2. (Should update my info)

Bristol_Jonesey From what I'm seeing here, the only thing that's wrong is the double-click to open Note Properties, but you can right-click to get to that particular dialog. Clicking & dragging works perfectly If by "clicking and dragging" you mean, for example, clicking on a quarter note and repositioning that note somewhere else on the stave without altering its duration, then yes it does. But the instructions cited above are describing how to alter the duration of a note, by altering its start or end time - in the same way that you can drag out the start or end time of a note in the PRV. Try this: select the edit tool (as above), then click and drag on a note on the stave. Nothing happens. It's obvious that they've simply copied instructions that pertain to the PRV here. Notice that it says "position the pointer over the note's start or end point." There is no "start or end point" on stave notes. You just click on the note. PRV notes, however, have a physical length which represents their duration, and thus a start and end point.

garrigus but can't rush it Indeed, and is probably the reason why the Sonar X2 manual has errors in it.

fooman Can you search the online manual? I didn't see a search feature. Was looking for this too. It's useless without a search. What happened to the offline manual? I used to just go to Help - search for a keyword, then pull up the appropriate article. It worked amazingly well. This online manual nonsense stinks in general. Was this an X1 change or did this happen in X2? So far, it's been the worse part about upgrading from 8.5.

If the online manual opens in IE you should be able to use Ctrl+F to search for text. My DAW isn't connected to the internet so SONAR seems to have recognized that and never provided the online option. However, there is an option for using the offline version instead, but I'm not in front of SONAR and cannot remember what/where it is...

In Preferences, you can choose to use Offline Help (forget where exactly, but it's one of the Advanced settings). Or you could create a desktop shortcut to the chm file that gets installed in the SONAR exe directory.

I use the offline, but X2 ships with online by default. Ya you can use the browsers search functionality... but what you are looking for is often not in the table of contents ;) It's on page 345 or 82 or 1023, etc.
Browsers do not let you search pages you are not on. Assuming this is all in a database a lil search function would be badass!

fooman Can you search the online manual? I didn't see a search feature. Sure there is. For example, you can search for "aftertouch" in the online manual by typing this into Google's search box: "aftertouch site: http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation" without the quotes of course. (ignore the hyperlink, I can't prevent the forum from deciding that I meant to hyperlink it. Dammit.) Alternatively, using the Search Cakewalk: [____________] box also works for the documentation, if you don't mind ignoring the hits that aren't from the manual.

I often avoid Google searches within sites if I can, because of the non-related hits. Searching only the manual would be awesome-possum, but of course would take time/money for cake to put it out rather than using a simple Google-search widget.
