X1 No Midi in the program

Im am unable to get midi output while in the program. Using Quicktime or WMP i get midi output. I've tried every setting combination i can think of in the program. I know an onboard soundcard is not ideal for creating/editing midi but i just wanted to get it to work, and i couldn't. Its a 7.1 Channel VIA HD Audio (VT1708S) Which actually has a crisp sounding midi device. All the instruments sound good. Not like an old NES system. Has more of an N64 era sound to it. LOL its nice. Just wondering if any1 could walk me through a standard sound device setup. I remember back in the day Cakewalk Pro use to just work at first boot. Select a track and it would default to a grand piano when using the midi keyboard. This **** wont even play sound....i spent an hour trying to get a midi file to play. It shows all the tracks lighting up like there is activity just NO SOUND!!!

Any suggestions ?

I am assuming you imported a midi file and want to play its output through your on-board sound card.

1.  Please go into Edit>Preferences>Audio>Devices and tell me what your selected input and output devices are, and also under Driver Settings tell me what driver mode you have selected.
2.  Please tell me for the midi track your midi file lives on, what is specified for the Output of that track?
3.  Do you have an associated audio track for the midi track where the imported midi file was placed?  If so, please tell me what is specified for the Input for that track

From first read - you really didn't provide any helpful information in your post, it would appear that you do not have the midi and audio properly routed - possible not even specified, causing there to be no sound output despite seeing meters light up while the track is playing.

I will review your response to what I am asking for above, and will try to help you move forward with all of this,

Hey - make sure you have ASIO drivers - the WDM ones give me unwanted delay.

Also, if you still have delay even using ASIO, then there is a manual box in preferences where you can adjust the delay compensation.  It is in the Sync and Recording section somewhere in one of the Audio choices.
