HDD setup X2

Hi Folks. I have just got a second HDD (both SATA 3) and am wondering the best way to organise everything. At the moment the single drive is partitioned with OS and apps on one and Audio files on other. I am planning on moving all audio to the second drive, but is there anything i should do ie get rid of the partition on 1st drive? Or maybe install vst and samples in that partition?
I have an usb 2.0 external drive too which i just use for back up.

I have 2 primary drives, and 1 external drive.

The first drive is used for the OS and for programs, so Cakewalk and any *.dll plugins and such live on this drive.

2nd drive contains all of my data and additional content files, documents, pics, etc, plus Session Drummer 3 content, Perfect Space content, Native Instruments sample libraries, and Cakewalk content - projects, templates, pro channel presets.

The above was done for performance reasons, not for space considerations.  Both drives on my system are 2 TB Sata 6.0 gbs drives.

My third drive is an external USB 3.0 2TB drive, that is only used for containing files and system images stored there by WIndows Backup.

The rational for performance is simply to split programs from data.  It allows 2 simultaneous reads and transfers to take place, and since both program and data access requests are linear, this creates the ideal situation.

I suppose I could get 1 or 2 more drives and further split things up, but I just don't have any issues whatsoever to warrant the expenditure of cash.

I hope this helps.  It's something you really only have to do once, and once the Cakewalk Preference Folder Locations settings are updated to any new locations, you will never have to worry about it again.

the GPO you'd have to tell where the samples are, from their interface.. (or via the registry perhaps IF it doesn't allow for it) hasn't anything to do with sonar..

I do put my samples on the 2nd partition though

This would have to done in the registry. You could do a search in the registry and try and find where it is pointing on the c: drive and then change it to point to the 2nd drive. Be careful and backup your registry before you play around in there.

While testing, do not MOVE anything. Just copy.

There should be no problem with having project files anywhere.

Leave all the VSTs, samples, templates where SONAR put them. The disk is big enough.
And there is no good reason to move them.

Why? Cuz once the OS loads, and Sonar loads, the OS drive is seldom accessed.

Most DP samples are not streaming. Leave them where they were installed.

  C: OS:  triple boot: w7-32. w7-64, w8-64
      All sonar stuff is installed on each of these partitions.
       C:\AudioPrograms:   all non-CW products

  D: samples: installed with other programs, and purchased separately.
        D:\AudioCommon  folder for 3rd party VSTs, VSTi.
        Also use this drive for storing  ZIPS: all installed programs, tools,....

  E: audio project files, CAL, synth presets/sysex, and template files I have created.

I do not want my stuff placed the in the stupid locations used by the default SONAR spots.

Once you are sure the project files are working from the new disk, and have copied all of them, and then deleted them, delete the partition, and expand the C: OS partition. UNLESS, you wish to install w8. (best not to do an inplace upgrade for the music computer)

In general partitioning is not needed. Why? Cuz the same heads are used to update 2 file tables. A waste of time.

If you are using streaming samples it will be best to get another disk.
