Tracks and Track Folders

Hi Folks,

This is not a problem I am posting, but just would like to know the views you guys have on this. How do you decide on which trackfolder to place your tracks in? Do you go by instrument families, like lumping all Strings into a 'Strings' folder and all flutes, saxes in a 'Woodwinds' folder and so forth, hence mimicking the scoring system of classical music:
String section, Woodwind section, Brass section and so forth. The other way I can think of is to go by the various sections/layers of a song and by that I mean, Lead, Rhythm, Bass, Drums, Fillers and so on. The advantage I can think of for this 2nd method is that I feel it's easier to do mixing this way, because Strings may appear both in in the Rhythm and Lead section, I may have set up a certain reverb for rhythm as a whole and another for the leads as a whole, so I can easily do the routing to the respective effects buses. Is there any other way to decide on track to track folder assignment? Hope everyone can share. Thanks.

regards
glisando

It just depends on how you prefer it. some like to have all vocals in one folder and all guitars in another and all drums in another and all keys in another an all strings in another. It entirely up to you. Just do what makes you feel comfortable. Maybe your workflow is better without them.

I personally tend to use them for drums and not much else, but I guess that's also dependent on material as much as anything.

I use them alot for all my live and studio recordings

I like to have all acoustic guitar tracks in one, electric guitars, drums broken down, Lead Vox and BU Vox, etc

It does a few things for me

Keeps the Track View clean and organized and keeps things together like when Im working say acoustic guitars. I might have 6 to 8 tracks and thats all that will be open in track view at that time.

It makes soloing, muting a breeze as well on particular instrument (Can mute like items all at once leaving others when mixing or ???)

Same as above for recording live drum tracks. Hit Arm on the track and get all mics armed up at once on the drums and not affect anything else.

It organizes Console View at the same time so when there are 16 or more tracks, it groups them together like they are in the folders-so no hunting

As for working on certain parts of songs, it will let me select a clip with in the track folder which will highlight a section of time that I can do Loops, Punch In/Outs, etc...

Just makes it so much easier if ya ask me-I like organization

It will all depend on what and how your using it for recording and mixing as to how you like yours setup

I always put the same kinds of instruments in the same folders, like drums, strings, guitars, vocals etc. I think it's easier to mix when it's organized like this.

I always put all MIDI-tracks in one folder too at the bottom of the project. It's nice just having to open one folder when wanting to edit MIDI instead of having to look for the MIDI-tracks in different folders.
