First practical (and very successful) use of R-Mix
I saw Jimmy Landry give a demonstration at Guitar Center in NYC and he touched on using R-Mix to eliminate unwanted sound/noise, etc. from recorded tracks. Turns out I had the perfect use for this... I had recorded a narration that was going to coincide with music underneath (Christmas Carol - Ghost of Christmas Present). When I recorded the actor's speech, I let him listen to an improv piano piece I had recorded to give him the mood and feel and timing. Unfortunately, when I recorded his voice I also recorded the sound of the piano from his headphones. This became a problem when I wrote the real cue and put his narration on top to give him the timing of the final cue. The sound of the headphone piano was REALLY distracting (different timing). So, to make a long story short... too late... I used R-Mix to effectively "remove" the headphone piano from the narration track! I couldn't believe how easy it was. With just a little bit of experimenting, it was gone. R-Mix... try it.... you'll like it! Thank you, Jimmy Thank you Cakewalk

That's interesting because I posted a thread earlier today about there being issues that made it unusable for me, and another person responded that he was having the same troubles. It seems like it should be a useful tool, but I can't get it to cooperate. 'Glad you're having luck with it, though.

As I said, I saw a demonstration and I think it was touched on in the Webinar (highly recommended) as well. I think this helped me to understand how it worked. One thing you have to get into your head is the whole "inside" "outside" thing.

rcrees As I said, I saw a demonstration and I think it was touched on in the Webinar (highly recommended) as well. I think this helped me to understand how it worked. One thing you have to get into your head is the whole "inside" "outside" thing. I'm not having trouble with the concept of it. It seems much like a very cut down version of part of iZotope RX2. The problem is it is--for me--very buggy in very odd and unusable ways. I'm sure CW or Roland will work it out, but right now, on my configuration, the plugin doesn't appear to be functioning properly. And as I said, others have mentioned they had the same problems. If you can't grab the right or left edge of the frame, or any corner either, then you can't properly select the area you want to work on. And if all of the "energy" display is pressed up against the left edge of the window before you've done anything, somethings at least seems out of whack. Since I can't afford RX2, I'll be very interested in the bugs being worked out of R-Mix. @pdlstl: I know what you mean. I've already said I wish CW would drop Radius and use Elastique Pro, which seems to me to give better results, in Sound Forge 10, Cubase 6x and most certainly Ableton Live.

I think R-mix is pretty cool actually. I have used it for a sort of cool quick fade out and also noise removal. It would be cool if multiple areas/shapes could be selected. The only bugginess I have encountered with it was when I put it over an ezdrummer track just to see where all the "clouds of energy" :)) were. It caused ezdrummer to malfunction and some patchs to cut out entirely. So I bounced to a new track and with ezdrummer as an audio file there were no issues.

yes,ive had good luck with R mix as well and very stable here. ive pulled vocals out of amix, dragged guitars out of a mix,and cleaned up a dirty club mix from cassette from 1991 with amazing results. i put on a small demonstration for one of my clients and he booked a session on the spot to remix/master some older demos i recorded for him years back. x2 is proving to be agreat success here with me at swann. i may be a small company but im staying busy and life is good with x2. well worth the jump up and the doe.

I'm getting a little jealous of those of you who haven't had trouble with R-Mix. It's a little odd how so many people are having such different experiences with different parts of X2. I basically love it and don't have most of the complaints others do, but then there's this thing that I can't get to work and you and others are fine. Weird.

@backwoods: 'Tried again; neither of those worked for me. The plug worked fine for a while, then after moving the frame around for a few minutes, I couldn't get the grab spots again. I did come to realize from someone else's comments that I had to make sure I was using a stereo track, which I didn't realize I wasn't before. It could be useful, if only the frame manipulation were consistent and there were a way to return controls to default. Maybe it's my system; I'll try the notebook later today

R-Mix seems to work fine for me although I only used it to see what it was all about. Thank you for sharing your real world example. I was trying to understand what it could be used for and this seems like a good example of one. Thanks

I played with it and it seemed to work as advertized. I also thought it was very useful for removing unwanted audio. It seemed simple to operate too.

R-Mix seems ok to me, but the results and flexibility are nothing compared to using RX2. I open clips in the full editor from my tools menu and Sonar handles the copy back-and-forth. SUPER easy, powerful, and flexible. For anyone wondering if RX2 is worth the money I would say it depends on your annual budget for gear. I work on a lot of live recordings and it has definitely been worth every penny for me. Peace, Tunes

Maybe it's my system; I'll try the notebook later today OK, I got a chance to use R-Mix on my notebook a little while ago and... I had no trouble whatsoever. It did pretty much what it was supposed to do, so the issue seems to have to do with my desktop configuration, possibly an issue with my video card, I suppose. A shame, because I like the potential of the plugin. @tunekicker: RX2 impressed me from the first time I saw it, but as I make no money from music, the cost was prohibitive. Also, I was fairly sure that that program might have been a bit beyond my capacity to grasp thoroughly. I thought now that Roland has R-Mix out, maybe iZotope would release a competing version of RX2 at around the same or lesser price point, but then I figured R-Mix might be licensed technology from iZotope anyway, so most likely not. BTW, there's also Sony Creative's SpectraLayers Pro that looks interesting, too.

SpectraLayers Pro does indeed look interesting. If they got the processing side of things right (how it sounds) this will be stiff competition for RX with the ability to separate into multiple layers. RX doesn't really have that concept. That said, RX is very flexible and powerful, although it can take a while to really master it. Peace, Tunes

I tried it out in one song that i needed to clean up the end of a stereo wave file. I used it in place of the Waves X Noise. It worked good and and i used the R-mix with envelope/automation so it only effected the very end of the song. CJ
