how do i make a studio recording sound live ?

hey there, hope you dont mind me throwing a question your way.
i could proably ask in tech.but i know theres experience in here.

i know theres alot of things i could do but my client is looking for that "Frampton comes alive" sound..to make it more live sounding.
straight delay and reverb are not cutting it.

so before i set up stereo speakers on each end of my studio and place the mic's 10 feet away.
i want your opinions.

i only wish i had the record plants elevator shaft they used for the second part of "train kept a rollin" by Aerosmith..
that sure sounded almost live.so did Frampton comes alive...i dont think that was live either,if it was it was overdubed.

thanks

    First, rent a large stadium.
Next, hire 30,000 extras to cheer.

Alternatively use a convolution reverb and get an impulse of the Carnegie Hall to go with it.

Then say 'do you feel like I do' and 'everyday' alot.

reverb and a track or two of audience noise will get you close. Listen to some good live albums... one that comes to mind is Humble Pie Rockin the Filmore..... listen to the variety of audience sounds, hoots, laughs, and other things going on in the audience..... and the music is good too.

The reverb is critical to get that hall/arena sound and some have presets with names like that..... but the real clincher is the sounds of the audience. You need to have a variety of audience sounds and tracks to blend in and use or it will sound like the canned laughter they use on TV sitcoms.

Hi, chuck. I'm not sure if you have an FXpansion account but they have a free "applause/crowd" plug available to anyone signed up to their website (I don't think you even have to own any of their products). I haven't tried it so I don't know how good it is but it's there if you are interested. As for the stadium type sound I'm sure Perfect Space (or maybe even Breverb) should be able to get something workable happening. I'd imagine the console emus might get you a bit closer to a live soundboard effect too. Just some thoughts. Cheers.

As above pick your convolution space of choice for the mix PLUS add audience sound effects.  I've done many studio cuts and made them sound like everything from an auditorium concert to an intimate nightclub.  AMBIENCE is the key.

     AMBIENCE is the key.

I thought holding Jonbouy's stick was the key?

What kind of live do you want? Live recording sound live because of the random background noises that happen.

What is it about clients asking for stupid stuff lately?

One guy:  "I want to record our CD with an old school approach."
Me:  What kind of budget do you have to work with?
    One guy:  "Budget?"
Me: You know, how much do you have to spend?  We're going to need a bigger room than a project studio.

Second guy: "I want a big drum sound."
Me: I've got a project studio, you know.  Small iso booth equals small drum sound.  But we can replace the drums with samples.
Second guy:  I'm really into acoustic drums.

Sorry, needed to vent about small time talent with big ideals.  ;)

Third guy:  "I want my drum samples to sound bigger than Bonham!"
You:  "There's the door.  Buh bye."
