Psst....

No, I didn't do this in The Sonah, but I'm posting it because it has one of THOSE pictures on it, and I know you were all dying to see.  It isn't even one of the better ones.

Don't know about anyone else, but I didn't see any picture.

But at least there was a cool song to listen to instead.

Oops, sorry.  Forgot to critic the effort!  It's nice but the vocals need to come up.  Really.

Love the song ... I agree ... vocals need to come up, but that's the only crit.

I found the picture ... the full size one ... it's not obvious where it is. You have to hunt and peck for it a little. :)

It's a great picture. I can see every little detail ... [That'll get them clicking around your page! :)]

    Psst indeed.
I like the feel of this. As mentioned, bring the vox up some. Don't dry it out, the saturated verb/delay fits. Just let it stand up a little more.
I'd be inclined to reign in the piano a bit. It tends to dominate when I really want to hear your voice.
This is a really wide mix, and I love your control of the space.
Texturaly rich. That vinyl effect is a nice touch. Very cool.

Ahhhh... You guys are great.  I have heard enough "raise it just a little" that I will do so.

Craig, I don't know where it's taking you... I see a thumbnail in the top left, but it is different on my phone (with the Soundclick app), where I see a whole screen of me. :)

I honestly was just posting this as a funny, here's one of those pictures... But I'm honestly happy that you guys took a listen and gave me some things to learn from.  Of course that may have been more apparent if some of you could SEE the picture.... :D

    So, thank you.

    Psst, JB.

Never say what you did it on unless someone is asking...

I was sure you used Sonar to bounce it down via Rewire.

I agree with Robert on the vocal FX, I can see that I'm going to have to pick your brains there and find out what you did.  It works really well.

    Re:Psst.... 2012/10/06 12:14:53 (permalink)
JB, it's basically this: each vox instance has three tracks... NO fx at all straight up the middle, flanked by a slightly tweaked and panned combinator patch on either side, one side panned slightly left, one slightly right.  The dry track is mixed the highest.  This gives me better control over the clarity--- I can raise the dry channel so it doesn't drown in the verb, but the verb presence is still there.  For the chorus, it's a different combinator that I've tweaked and saved... One I've named Beth, after Beth Gibbons of Portishead. I use it all the time, tweaking the Resonance and delay to match a song (this one has no delay). Want me to email it to you?

All told, there are actually twelve vox tracks on this one, but I only recorded two.

I WISH I could get ReWire happening... I can slave it all as ONE track, or try to slave it to all tracks and get nothing.  I still don't know what I'm doing wrong there, but it IS forcing me to learn new tricks, which is probably better in the long run, anyway.

    HA Wook... MS MusicMaker.... ;)

It's been a pet peeve of mine for years that one.  I can be done but there's really little point now since Reason got its' own audio engine.  I sometimes bounce down stems to mix in Sonar it's just as easy to do that now rather than faffing with Rewire.

Yes the Combinator patches would be great, or even a blank project to see how you go about routing your own vox would be brilliant.

EDIT: I'd do it NOW, except the kid is Minecrafting on the PC  and likely will be doing so for the next 48 hours or so. LOL
