Why Can't I Automate Mute?
Read and Write are enabled on a track. In the track drop down, I selected Automated Mute. I play the track and click the Mute button in the track off and on. When I play back, nothing happens: my mute changes are not there. I have struggled repeatedly with this and it is frustrating. What am I missing? I won't tell what I am trying to do becaue the wonderful people here will suggest lots of other ways to do the same thing: but I need mute to work. That is a basic function of mixing. THANKS!

In thelp it says to right-click the Mute button and change it to automated Mute. i did that. It still does not record the On/Off clicks—in fact, the On/Off clicks don't even mute the track in real time.

Automated mute has always been funky here, but I think the track mute button used to work although it's never worked with a control surface. I just use an envelope and change that nowadays. EDIT: Just checked automated mute via the interface is definitely working here, but it won't via a control surface. HTH

Because of previous feedback on this forum, I am not trying to mute from a control surface: I am trying to mute by clicking on the Mute button after enabling everything as described above. Could you maybe tell me waht you are doing? By the way, in frustration, I tried to draw volume envelopes after watching the Sonar X1 Explained videos on Automation. I chose Automation | Volume in the track drop down and selected the Line toor and the Freehand tool. Neither one will draw in the track lane—I just get a pointer tool. What the heck on this? I cannot believe I am spending all day trying to get a vocal track to come off and on.

- Right click on mute button and select "Switch to Automation Mute".
- Right click on mute again and select "Automation Write Enable"
- Play back project and click on mute as required.
- That should write an automation envelope for you.

Followed all your steps. Writing Mute does not work. Thanks anyway. I wonder if having a V-Studio screws up this function?

That is a possibility I guess although sounds unlikely. It still won't work from a control surface (or not an MCU anyway) so if it's a bug may be related.

I use envelopes to "mute" and "unmute" the track parts.... I use the "real" mute and apply it as audio fx to the tracks to clean up the little clicks and pops that are recorded into the tracks..... I'm not aware, nor have I ever heard of using mute in the manner you describe by automating it since envelopes already do that so well. It would have to use an envelope regardless to mark it's points on the timeline so you could edit the mutes..... therefore..... use an envelope for volume and you're done.

In my mind, "mute" is something that a lot of the time is used creatively by feel in real time. So, automating mute is necessary. The feature is screwy, especially with a controller. Trying to do it with a mouse will drive you batty.. I've had it work with padkontrol as a controller. To the OP. Try the learn function on the right click mute. It is pretty funky all the clicks you have to do before you actually can automate something.

I do use volume envelopes but I also use automated mute from time to time. Depends on what I'm doing TBH. Automated mute though is an envelope it's just a different way of writing them, I would def use it more than I do though if it worked from a control surface.

Recording a Mute Envelope works perfectly here - just like Karl describes. I've been using them for years without issue
