Compression after Eq.

Hi Folks,
Just a question. In the mastering stage, what would be the rationale of using the LP64 multiband compressor after using the LP64_EQ_64 (or any EQ followed by any multiband compressor for that matter)? I am asking this because since the cutting or boosting of any specific frequency or frequency range is done in the LP64 EQ, why than do we need a multiband compressor, which once again allows us to 'fiddle' with the frequency ranges? Hope someone can explain. Thanks.

regards
glisando

An EQ affects all the signal in a given freq range, while a multiband only compresses that area if the signal goes past a defined threshold.

If you've achived a nice general freq balance with the eq, you may still need to tame peaks in for instance the low end in order to get a full and present bass throughout the track.

If you don't have access to the multitrack mix, the multi band compressor can be a lifesaver!

By the way, if you use a Mastering Suite such as Ozone 5, you will find that is their preferred "chain" of effects... EQ>Enhancer>Multiband Compressor>Stereo Imager>Limiter>Loudness Maximizer.

    Cheers!
