yeah... more drives is OK.... but it's also so easy to add more.... if and when they are needed.

I started with 2 drives on a dedicated music computer.... no internet and no AV. I have not even come close to filling these drives and I write and compose a lot of music.

drive 1 is for the OS and the programs.... 500GB in size. Since everything is music related, no junk programs, there is way more than enough room for everything. I also allow Cakewalk to store current projects there as well.

Drive 2 is a 1TB storage drive. I keep all my samples on it and it also stores finished projects. I have 4 years worth of finished projects in numerous folders and it's nowhere close to being filled....it also stores the originals from downloaded programs and synths.

I also use a 1TB external to mirror drive 2 and save original copies of downloads for software

I use other internet connected computers for surfing the net.

I record into C drive.... the main one.

C drive gives the fastest performance specs.... and I let it stay in the C drive in the projects folder for cake until I finish it.

At that point I cut and copy to the 2012 folder which is also on the c drive desktop..... at the end of the year, I do house cleaning and move the 2012 folder to the second drive and copy it to the external and create new 2013 folder on the desktop.

    No.... it's not necessary.

You can run it fine on one drive.

I use the second drive to store the samples for my synths since the samples are audio and in wave form, they take up a very large amount of space..... so they go on a seperate drive along with the old files & project folders.

I have been running like this for several years and for a few before that I ran it all on a laptop with one drive.

By the time my storage drive fills up, I can add a new storage drive but likely the computer will have died by then and I'll have an even newer one with 2 TB drives.....

You might get more replies in the computers forum below. Some would advise having at least two hard drives for DAW use, one for the OS and apps and the other for audio files. Others add a third drive for samples. It depends on the nature and size of you audio projects.

THere is nothing wrong with having dedicated hard drives to store samples and work projects.

By having the WORKING project on the main C drive with the program things work a bit faster.

Saving old projects to E,F,G.... doesn't matter. Since samples are mostly loaded to memory and are not streamed in most synths, it's fine to have a dedicated drive for them as well.....

I was simply saying it doesn't really matter with the size of drives available these days.  You can run the DAW with one or with ten drives..... it's up to you.

Keeping your old projects on a different drive from the main C provides some protection against loss in a c drive crash.

If you've got 'em, use 'em.
But I've been using just the one drive without problems for years. My songs are not huge, though, and I'm not as prolific as many folks. I've barely made a dent in my 300 GB HD.

Re:hdd setup on how many is best 2012/10/15 08:04:59 (permalink)
Interesting thread.  I already had the laptop I'm running Sonar X1 on.  It is powerfull enough (see signature specs), but I too was reading about performance and 7200rpm drives vs. 5400rpm drives - the laptop has a 5400rpm internal hdd.

Opinions vary, but I gathered that an external 7200rpm connected via a USB 3.0 would perform well.  I don't know that I need to organize everything like I've read in the Power book and in some threads here, but I am storing project files on the external hdd.  I have another external hdd I can access for storing copies/backups of project files as well.

In a project, I am typically going to have a 'maximum' of 2-3 vocal tracks, 2-3 guitar audio tracks, 2-4 midi tracks (drums, piano, bass, string).

Anyway, what d'ya think?  Ok plan?  Do I need to put something specific on that external hdd?

    Thanks.
