vintagevibe Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk ] Hi Craig, My vote as a nice topic for an X2 power user column would be exploring the quick grouping features available. Quick grouping has been enhanced quite a bit in X2 with several new operations available and there are a ton of things that you can do to simplify common tasks that users have not discovered. If you are doing PC FXChains you can even touch on this topic there - every control in PC effects chains is quick groupable so you can affect multiple effects chains by simply selecting tracks/buses and moving controls. Noel, why did they remove the ability to quick group Key +/- starting with X1? I'm sure Noel will answer but the "Key +/-" AFAIK was never quick groupable. It was however possible to use the Tracks-->Property field to change multiple tracks at once. That was removed with X1. As to what should be mentioned. I agree with those that have said the little things that add up. Auto track zoom, improved quick grouping, smart grid, the alternate grid, etc. All of those add up to a real workflow enhancement... not quite up there with screensets but pretty close.

I see much improvement in X2. Regarding the Staff View: As usual, there are those on the forum who still don't understand the difference between editing MIDI in SV versus printing publisher quality notation. I believe the the majority of those who would like to see SV improvements are looking at the MIDI editing functionality of the SV, not printing. I could even support the idea that if you want to print anything more than a simple lead sheet or part, buy a notation program. Buying a separate notation program does not help with the composing workflow, which necessitates an embedded SV editor. I don't think we need to expose potential new users to the dirty little secret that SV has limitations which have not been addressed in years. However, they should know that there are limitations. As in previous reviews Craig has done (and this is not opinion, but fact), he could have one sentence which says that "there have been no improvements to the limited Staff View". PS - to the "i dont believe daws are measured for their staff view enhancements" guy: It depends on who is doing the measuring.

You mean like this, from my X1 review in Keyboard magazine: [under summary - the very first con listed] CONS: Staff view remains primitive. Or this, in the body copy: Oh, and by the way . . . AudioSnap works well now. However, staff view has been only minimally improved, so don't expect significant differences there. Doesn't do too much good to write this stuff if people don't read it. Just sayin.'

Warn them that they may need a larger monitor -again- seems with the loss of layers, replaced with take lanes, that we lost more real estate. You may also want to mention that layers are gone, I don't think I'm the only one looking at other software because of this change.

I assumed it was a review of X2 when in fact it sounds like it will be more of a tips / techniques thing. However, many times I read tips / techniques columns for apps I don't own to get a better understanding of how things work and if work-arounds are necessary. Here's an idea... One of the columns could be a collection of tips / techniques for being productive in the existing SV. Things like keyboard short cuts, mouse tricks, tips for inserting, selecting and modifying notes, working with the HUD while in the SV, tidying up the display before you print (should you elect to print), the best way to export MIDI data a dedicated notation app, once a composition is finished. Stuff like that.

Re the first point - I hadn't really thought about that in terms of writing for SOS, because I just assumed the Logic people read the Logic column, the Pro Tools folks went to Pro Tools, etc. But I suspect you're not the only one who reads articles that way...hmmm... I do try to write as "general purpose" a column as possible, for example, I hope people can translate some of the Sonar techniques to other programs. Re the second point, that's an excellent idea. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be the right guy to write it because I hardly use Staff View, so I would probably just embarrass myself by saying stupid things. Then again, maybe on some rainy dayI should try to educate myself about it so I can at least get a grip on using it more fluidly and becoming more familiar with ALL of Sonar, not just what I use. Thanks for the comments!

Anderton becoming more familiar with ALL of Sonar, not just what I use. LOL! Life is far too short for that, surely? I use a CAD package in my day job. The amount of tools are massive and there is just no way on earth that you would use all of them in any given day. You tend to become an expert with the tools required for your particular discipline. The problem with this, however, is that you sometimes miss out on a particular feature that could save you a load of time and increase your productivity. I liken this to everyday tools. Take a wood screw for instance. For years I've been using a hammer to whack my wood screws into place. It works, but it's kind of messy and sometimes I break things. Then one day a friend told me about a "screw driver" and boy, did that make a difference. If only I had been told about a powered screw driver... Life would be so much different then, would it not. So, the point I'm making here, is that it is sometimes best if we at least learned about ALL of the tools in the box, rather than just picking up on a few and muddling along from there... Anyhow, I digress :-D

I think it would be good that while you point out all the great new work flow in X2 that you also point out in the article that the award winning VS 700 system has been left wanting.

Jim Roseberry Workflow changes... Auto Zoom, Track auto zoom, Track layers, Smart tool.... get my vote.
+1 The small changes that make day-to-day use much nicer... +1 from me as well. No ... make that +2, because I think these topics easily warrant four pages of coverage rather than the usual two. Clearly you've got a good four or five (maybe even more) months worth of material on X2 to cover, Craig. I'm looking forward to all of it.

I realise I'm very late to the party, but I think one huge thing X2 has over others,or what makes it interesting to mention,is just the sheer amount of "tools" included" with the program[Producer of course]. I mean even with just the"Pro Ch. mods",and"Breverb"[stock inc.]I would have upgraded, but then you've ALSO got "Console Emu.","R-Mix",THD Amp Sim[which I'm not finding that different to others, but hey, maybe an "amp sim Epiphany" will strike tonight!!]and "time Line" "horizontal Zoom"[which I love],and "FX chains 2.0" About the only things I dislike, are the "help chm",and the PDF Manual, for some reason, everytime you look for something, you've then got to go to a totally different section, rather than just explaining stuff,in one place[like Scott G's Book]-I'd have been"put away" without "X1 Power". Hey, before this thread drops off into Page 187 Oblivion, I just want to say once more THANK YOU to everyone for their comments. Excellent suggestions, and they've also helped me prioritize what to cover. I've never been let down when coming here for advice. Also to follow-up with Noel's comment - the reworked Quick Groups functionality is fantastic! What impresses me so much is that "on paper," it seems like it would be useful. But when you're actually doing a complex session, you find out how it can be helpful in so many ways. It's sort of like "small feature, HUGE applications." Great job on the implementation.
