a song file bigger than 1 Gb

I'd like to know why a song file grows up over the years and becomes bigger and bigger as 1 or more Gb.

Multiple takes?  Usually audio data is to blame.  That's about the only thing of any size.  Auto-Save?  I think you tellit how many versions to keep.  Those get big over time.

    "Over the years"?????

You mean you don't record anything, but the file gets bigger? :o)
Note, that every audio recording take stays in the Project Audio folder even if you delete it from te project.
You need to use the Clean Audio Disk-tool (or whatever it's called in X-versions) or save under a new name (and click "Copy audio with project") to get rid of all unnecessary audio data.

1 Gb is nothing extraordinary. If you think about it in audio tracks: It's little more than one CD. If you have 20 audio tracks in a 5 minute long project, that's it. Especially if you use a higher sampling rate than 44,1 kHz.

AFAIK the only thing that will make a project file grow in size is Audiosnap data. Even then 1 Gb seems excessive. A cwp file is just a pointer to the audio not the audio files themselves although I believe MIDI data is stored within the cwp.

If that is the case try bouncing audio clips down and make sure audiosnap is disabled on clips (Clip inspector-->Audiosnap tab)

Autosave won't make a difference as that is just a separate cwp file but if you do have autosave enabled you can check the file size of that as well to compare the two. They should be more or less the same size unless something in the original has become corrupted though.

obviously over the years once in a while I managed to work on the project, but nothing special. But over years the song file grew bigger and bigger.
No auto save. No audio snap. Used clean audio disk tool.

Do a saves as of your project to a completely different location. Make sure "Copy Audio With Project" is checked.

Delete the original, then move the copy back. See how big it is now.

Every take adds more to the file size especially the audio takes.

Even if you delete the take from the track, it remains in the AUDIO FOLDER and it is recoverable from there.... but it is included in the total file size of the project.

If you use loop recording and let that thing run for 20 loops and takes....every single one of those loops are saved even if you only choose one of them in the end.

As a result.... yeah a song file/folder can in fact easily exceed 1GB or more. I have more then one that is that size.

I have heard that if you open the file...and do a SAVE AS with a new name, the only clips saved in the new file are the ones physically in the project and not the entire audio folder.   I have not tried doing that since my drives are pretty large and space has not become an issue.  However, I may try that on the one file I know is huge just to check it.

If it grows and you are not working on it..... I would investigate that issue further with virus checkers. A file should not get bigger unless you are recording more tracks and takes in it.

I might be misunderstanding the OP. If the reference is to the project folder than yes it'll grow as audio is added and even deleted as the actual audio isn't (deleted).

I've read it as the cwp is over 1 GB and that shouldn't  be overly affected by audio other than audiosnap data and I certainly haven't got anything near that in size, despite several long songs with multiple takes of multiple instruments at 24bit.

    Cwb file maybe?

He must mean a CWB file not a CWP. I've never seen a CWP that big because CWPs do not contain any audio, only pointers to audio files.

Hey Bristol- Jonesey, why you suggest that kind of save? Can you explain what do you mean?

Doing a 'Save As' has a couple of real benefits, provided you obey a couple of strict rules.

1 - you MUST ensure "Copy audio With Project" is selected
2 - you MUST save it to a totally different location to your "normal" audio path.

Once you've done this, you can safely delete the original project as everything that is needed for it is now contained within the new project file structure.

I thinh that the real thing is to open Project/audio files and you can whatch all the song's audio files and their own weight. Taking for example a bass track, you can really take note that there are possibly 15 or 20 takes of them, each with their own  wave number and their single weight in KB! That's how a song can grow bigger and bigger over the time. What do you think about that?

Re:a song file bigger than 1 Gb 2012/10/22 10:45:55 (permalink)
The amount of audio tracks and takes is almost irrelevant to the size of the cwp file, the audio isn't stored in the file. The audio is stored either in the global audio folder or in the audio folder associated with the file.

The cwp file contains pointers to the audio. If you have a cwp file of 1 GB you must definitely work in a different way to me. In fact I'd suggest there's something wrong with the set up.

I have projects that have 40 or 50 audio tracks of 5 - 8 minutes in length with anything up to a dozen takes per track. I don't think I've got any cwp files over 2,000 kb (Yes kb). Of course the project folder is much larger but not the actual cwp file.

Are you sure you're not saving as a bundle file (cwb)? That does contain the audio and will be large.

Exactly. That's what we have been trying to tell you. :o)
The confusing thing to us was that you were talking about a "song file", which can be undersztood in many ways.
The project file (cwp) is one thing, a bundle file (cwb) is another thing, and the Project (or Global) Audio folder is again another thing. To be understood correctly you should use the terminology used in SONAR instead of inventing your own.

Out of curiosity I just checked my files for size.
I keep each song in a FOLDER, The CWP and the audio file inside.
Those FOLDERS average between 170 MB and the biggest was 456MB ( was a 6 min. song )  These are standard 3-4 min. rock song arrangement with live drums and bass, couple guitars and vocal tracks. say around 15 audio tracks,  MIDI is basic keyboards ( organ piano) I have done no deleting or file clean up and some of these songs have dates like 2010 and have been worked to death. There are many re takes and edits. I think they would represent a pretty average recording project.

So 1 Gig?? it must be a 10 minute song as that seems to determine a lot regarding file size.

Oh and most important=  24/44.1 As that will make big difference.

I just had a look at some of mine.

I'd say on average, the audio folders are between 2 & 3 Gb for a typical 5 minute rock song (I don't do short songs )
cwp files are between 2 & 3 Mb

My biggest project which has 75+ tracks, loads of synths, 100+ plugs is about 10Gb in total, but again, the cwp is an order of magnitude smaller (and this particular project took over a year to complete with multiple guitars, vocal harmonies, many, many takes, live V-Vocal clips - you get the picture - this thing is over 12 minutes long so the size doesn't surprise me one bit.

I have understood that the saving procedure in X1 is similar to older SONARs. If that is correct, then, as default the SONAR project files are saved in C/ Cakewalk Projects.. The audio goes to either global or per project audio folder, depending on what you have set. As default, the project file and audio are never saved inside the same folder unless you specificly make it happen.

If the system has been changed, I apologize and shut up.
