Rain (Go Away)

It's a cool synthpop song. The mix is a bit weak, and I had to use a pretty lo-quality mic on this because I had no choice. Tell me what you think!

hey dude.. I like it!  I really like the sound in the break at 1:20 and the end.  I'm listening to a laptop, so I can say much about mix, but I like the staccato, choppy rhythm.  I don't think the mic was your enemy... but may want to check vocal pitch and timing in just a few spots.

    Good stuff!  Thanks for posting.

    Cheers!

If you hadn't mentioned the mic, I never would have guessed.  The mix sounds pretty good on my monitors, and it's really helped by the quality of your songwriting and catchy vocals.  Let's hear more.

Interesting mix. Seemed to have a little to much low end for my taste. Around 2:20 got some distortion on my cheap speakers for about 1 second. The song is good and the melody is catchy. The song is good

Not a bad song, in fact a good song, but there is distortion in the recording somehow, and things in previous posts mentioned, except I was not getting too much low end in it for me.

yea...very catchy tune...very popish....I like that. I like the break. To my ears the mix needs loads of work but the tune is strong....so thats way more important (to me anyway) good job!

Sounds MUCH better on real speakers as opposed to my laptop last night.  But I couldn't understand all the vocals as well... maybe put a hint of exciter on them???

I MAY have heard the aforementioned distortion in one or 2 places, but then again, it may be a synth sound with a filter wide open but down in the mix (so it would sound like distortion)... so not sure about this one.

    Still cool!

    Cheers!

    Re:Rain (Go Away) 2012/10/17 16:47:02 (permalink)
Thanks, Lynn! I'll be writing many more, hoping to eventually remix this one a bit better (for pitch) and release a full album.

Thanks for listening, MC!! I really pumped the bass on this one... That chunk of distortion was my idiot decision to have the bass do some two-part chords at that point, and it did not sounds too great. Thanks again!

Yeah, thanks, spacecalf. If I were to pinpoint the distortion, it's mostly in that I pushed the vocals a tad bit over-the-limit at some parts of the song. Definitely could take a once-more-over in some aspects. Thanks for listening!

Ha, thankya, the pogue! And yeah, the mix could take a beating before its ready for a grand rerelease... I may actually re-record the vocals and pitch correction..... Hm...... Thanks for takin a look, though.

How's it going, tbosco! Thanks for checking this one out, too!!! I really pushed this one towards a synthpoppy, happy, upbeat sound, which I think I achieved about as well as I could. Additionally, it really DOES sound way better on better speakers/monitors, which I'll bet is because there's a lot of bass, but veeeery light/'few' mids and tons of highs. Hearing it on my own stereo sounds way better than through my cheapo desktop speakers.
And yeah, I've gotta get out of the mentality of 'the mic is evil'... It's really pulling me through, and I'll admit I scrambled the pitch correction together to get the song out there fast; I'll be going back to it and redoing a bit of the vocals and PC. Thanks again!!!

Thanx, TNF! I'll be trying harder to make these even better, and eventually there'll be an album.

To everyone, one of my friends has had he complaint that most recent works seem to lack a 'climax' or 'building point'. Anyone who can point me in the right direction on that note?

In general, this electro pop/synthpop project's working name is 'nLightning' (of course, a play on 'enlightening' and 'lightning'). Hopes are these songs only get better- I'm glad you guys like what I'm doing, and hopefully I'll be able to release the album soon for pretty cheap (gotta keep food on the table :D )!!!

I like the song a lot. Mix needs some work to really make it shine - vox and drums in particular. Love that lil break at 1:17.

I like the song. It's really good musicly. The mix is too loud and maybe recorded to loud.

    Great tune!!!

nonat, thanks for taking a listen! I do tend to focus a lot on jumpy chords.

Thanks, paulo! I'll be doing a true scrubbing down of this track, because I honstely recorded, mixed, and up'd on the same day. I can def see what voice mixing needs doing. Anything specific you can suggest for the drumkit?

Hey, Gpima! Thank you for listening! In this case, the biggest overblow probelms were in my Amplification and my semi-refusal to do a lot of true mixing. In a couple of days, I'll have a remixed version up for your listening pleasure ;)

I think this is a very catchy tune!
I listened to both mixes...the first one I found the vocals a bit too dry and sitting "on top", but good.
the second one seems kind of distorted, but the vocals are sitting in a much better place.

All in all I REALLY like this song...it is quite catchy and well done!

Thanks, cclarry! I can definitely agree- I didn't really take a ton of notice to the bit of vocal distortion that was reached. Guess I'll have to keep it in mind for future projects.

I am more into the songwriting than the mixes.  My partner handles that.  I like the song and am listening on good monitors and can't say what I would do differently.  I heard a distorted sound once but I was more listening to the song.  I get very scope locked on things and was locked on the song.  Good one!

Thanks a bunch, evdianepug! It honestly just occured to me that I haven't really discussed my songwriting in this thread at all (or any, for that matter)!
I personally think I have quite a way to go when it comes to lyrics.. Additionally, I'm really dry for the VACVACBC (or ABCABCDC) song arrangement, but I really want to explore new solutions. I'm also not great with staying in a a subject line.
In any case, this one came out really nice in my opinion, and I guess it was more of a lucky diamond-in-the-rough than anything.

    Thanks again!

    Nice little song here!

My only nit is that the vocals are so up front (and somewhat distorted, I might add) that it makes the music sound like it's coming from another room. I'd drop the vox way down, anywhere from 4 - 8 db and see if you can get the singer and the band in the same room.
