how do I make Live effect recordings?

My question today is how do listen to VST effects in real time for recording guitar tracks with patch effects in sonar X1. The delay drives me crazy... WHat I mean is when I load an effect like say guitar rig into a track patch area how can I listen to the effect without that delay so I can listen to the effect live and in time with the recording?

The delay is called latency. You can adjust it by hitting 'p' to bring up preferences. Find the latency tab and experiment with ASIO as well as WDM drivers. Then see how low you can move the slider down. The lower it is, the lower the latency or delay. See which one gives you the lowest latency at which you can play back your song without it crackling or dropping out.

If this doesn't get you far enough, your computer and soundcard may not be up to spec. What are the specifications of your computer and soundcard? Most modern computers should be powerful enough to get useable results so it is hopefully just a matter of adjusting your latency. I tend to like around 5ms latency for guitar stuff. Keep in mind that the more CPU intensive VSTs you have running (or any other type of plug), the harder your computer has to work, and the greater you must set the latency value so it continues to run smoothly without glitches.

check your soundcard and it's settings. Latency and buffers tend to slow things down. Be sure the drivers are the right ones for the sound card to run optimally.

Of course, having a nice soundcard is paramount too.

well ****... I started to tweek to my buffer settings and sure enough Im running 5 racked soft syths and my guitar with G-rig 4 at 3 bufferes in playback Q, size is 9.0msec at 396 samples
Effective latency at 44KHz/ stero 18.0msec and everything is running great. Driver mode is WDK/KS , w/ no dithering. I think I might add just a pinch more to be safe. THanks guys!

You can freeze your soft synths for cpu saving and then you might be able to get lower in your latency. Try a brand new project with just guitar rig only and see how low you can get. Then you can use that as a benchmark.

driver WDK/KS..... depending on the card..... many of the USB interfaces will actually run better on ASIO.

However, if it's a factory card MME and WDK is probably the best driver to use.  I'm amazed if it is a factory card and you can actually run all those synths without to much issue. That's cool.

Im sorry Hacker I forgot to mention its an external usb interface. What follows is just ****ed. I tried to set sonarx1 to run ASIO and it doesnt work. when I set the buffer to the shortest time its crazy choppy, anything higher is too much of a delay time for echoing the input signal. Heres the silly part. My audiobox IS AN ASIO DEVICE. when I start my PC, it defaults to 256 buffer size. If I set sonar to ASIO I cant run my soft synths like EZDRUMMER and so on. Im able to adjust the buffer from sonar but I cant get anything to playback. EZdrummer doesnt have tap to listen anymore. Even setting the audiobox manually outside of sonar causes the same choppy and delay problems when sonar is loaded back up. When I set sonarx1 back to WDK/KS, everything works fine and I can adjust the buffer rate to a reasonable setting in which theres little noticable delay on input echo.... If it aint broke dont fix it... Im sure I would have to set my ezdrummer tracks to the right output master and such, maybe its me and not sonar.

why cant I even use ASIOfrom sonar when the audiobox IS an ASIO device.
