    Very true.

    I was going to say Mahalia Jackson too, but she's been gone quite some time now.

    She still sounded a little shrink wrapped to me...like someone doing an impression of a great singer than actually living it...

    I don't know, I just hear a feeling and a swing in musicians from 30, 40 years ago that I don't hear today. I want to hear it, but I don't. Here's another great example....Little Feat....you just don't hear that feel and swing anymore

    Speaking of Mahalia Jackson, I thought she sang the theme to The Jeffersons, so I looked it up on u toob to discover that Sherman Hemsley died a few months ago. If I knew, I had forgotten. Then that led me to read about his death and it says that he was a recluse, and left everything, which was nothing, to his agent. Then suddenly, a guy shows up claiming to be his brother and stopped his funeral and he's been frozen in a morgue in Texas since July until this guy can prove he's really his brother.

    Ain't the internets amazin?

    Sorry to derail the thread, but ya had to know it was coming, right?

    ;)

    That's because there were actual musicians in the recording studio. Back then normally you went in with the people you gigged with and you knew each other so well the feel came natural. Now days it's all Sonar and studio musicians ... if that. For example, there will never be another CCR ... :(

    If you like Karen Dalton, check out Jessi Collin Young. He put out a couple of great albums in the early 70's. Hard to find, even on the toob. Morning Sun is one of his best imo. Not quite the same vocal styles, but the same kind of feel. This is one of those albums you must have the LP of. The CD kills it.

    That's some nice stuff Bub, good to hear he's still around these days as well....usually when I discover a new great musician it turns out they died years ago (Jackson C Frank, Bill Chase etc)

    Well at the risk of being boring I'm on a bit of a BCC/Joe Bonnamassa kick lately, and Joe really does have that smoky, husky soulful quality;

    Song of Yesterday

    Glenn Hughes ain't too shabby either..

    Lots of good female singers have character in their voices....even today.

    So many come to mind.... I particularly have e number of favorites.....mostly in the country/folk world

    Emmylou Harris is first and foremost, Trisha Yearwood, Kathy Mattea, Allison Krauss, and going back to the 70's one of my early favs was Sandy Denny

    enjoyed a guest artist on a local PBS broadcast...

    Linda Ronstadt.

    What about Peggy Seeger singing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face in 1957....today's "American Idol-esque" singers could learn a thing or two about vocal ornamentation from this.
