Experience that SONAR X2 randomly just stop playback sometimes? *Official response
Hi all! Have you also notice and experience that SONAR X2 randomly just stop playback sometimes? You get a “drop out” warning in the control bar. It’s happen randomly, not always and it’s no matter of the load or kind of project…so it’s not a matter of CPU spikes or buffer setting whatever… Please Post if you get this kind of randomly warnings you too.. I think it’s a bug somewhere in the audio stream? Thanks in advance!

With X1 i never had a single dropout, no matter what project i was running on..in fact i became confident (dumb?) enough to leave a/v and wireless on while i was working..not a single problem...in fact i had never even seen the "drop out" warning thingy so i can confirm that X2 is far more sensitive to this than x1...i had a three day downtime of productivity trying to assess why for no reason i started to get dropouts.. and while i dont mind disabling a/v and wireless to work on x2..i do note this as a comparison to x1..nothing else has changed in my system at all... and dropouts can occur on realtively simple, audio only projects...

I'll tell you what I have seen. This doesn't happen regularly - maybe seen it 2 or 3 times at most, but playback will stop, a message will say "The audio Engine has stopped working" with a dialog box giving the choice of Help or Cancel. Selecting Cancel starts playback again. This never affects exports, and I always run a hybrid of Audio & Midi so can't pin it down to either one.

By moving audio clip lengths I can actually get the audio to stop playing ( No Drop out Error )Time line keeps moving Any soft synths I have running still produce noise but the audio wont play ( Nothing is soloed and nothing is muted ) again until I reload X2. This can happen in any session and I have reported it.

I had all manner of pops clicks and dropouts. After unchecking the option "Use MMCSS (Windows Vista - Win 7)" everything was fine. Maybe that could help? My cpu is i7 2600k 4 core and my os is Win 7 64.

Freddie, You're not sharing with everyone the official response. You shared the automated email that told you a new message was added to the bottom of the report. The message was brief, but it basically said that these types of topics are PERFECT topics for Technical Support. It also shared with you an article that lists common causes and solutions to clicks, pops and dropouts. Here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/2007013007 I don't mean to pick on anyone, but vague reports such as "the program crashes sometimes" or "the program drops out" really aren't going to go anywhere. Specifics are needed and when we ask for them many times we're given some very odd responses. Dropouts can be caused by a number of factors, on any computer, with any DAW. I deal with this same type of stuff in my part-time job with every other host as well. It's definitely not a "SONAR bug". Instead of encouraging people to send reports of dropouts to the Problem Report Form, I'd instead encourage people experiencing dropouts to give Tech Support a call so we can work on isolating the problem. Sending a report of dropouts to the problem report form won't help you get back to recording, which should really be your ultimate goal here. Now with that being said, if after working with someone in tech support they do discover a problem with audio engine performance that needs to be escalated to dev... we can always do that as well. Those types of reports require a lot of specifics though, so it's best to get in touch with someone who can ask the right questions.

Well said Ryan. And thanks for answering that in a normal (polite) font. All that boldness and smileys makes my head hurt sometimes. (But maybe that's just me)

Keep in mind that Freddie is not a native English speaker. I think he does a great job in supporting Cakewalk. But anyone can become frustrated from time to time.

This is a serious point...... elsewhere Freddie you said you were using 64 bit floating files as your recording preference. I would imagine given the size of those wave files you'd need a fairly healthy I/O buffer set in Preferences-->Audio--->Sync & Caching===>Playback & recording. Too small or large buffers there will cause dropouts while running under seemingly light loads. Basically Sonar can't get the data off the drives quick enough if too small or has to wait for the buffer to fill if too large. Result is a dropout either way. HTH.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter if you come from Mars, you have to be absolutely accurate in what you are reporting. There are too many variables.

This has been my experience also. If I took the time to report every dropout, I wouldn't be doing anything else. No changes to my OS or audio interface.
