Play one project while Recording another - Possible?
Hey guys, I was wondering if it's possible to play an existing project in Sonar while recording another one at the same time. I have 8.5 Producer. I wanted to start making tutorials, so I would need to record the changes as I am making them. Thanks for the help! -Jonathan

JComissio I was wondering if it's possible to play an existing project in Sonar while recording another one at the same time. I imagine that this would be impossible for lots of different reasons. But why don't you just try it and see?

Well you could export the one project to a WAV and then play that using Media Player while recording another in Sonar as long as you're not using ASIO mode in Sonar. Or you could burn a CD and play that while recording the other project.

Thanks for the reply guys. Daveny5, the reason why I can't do that is because I want to be able to mix a project and record the changes that I make while I make them. For example, i want to playback a guitar part and EQ it, but while I'm EQing it it's recording in another project so I can playback the guitar and hear it being EQ'ed.

Davenys suggestion does not in any way exclude the possibility of recording the changes taking place. Do the EQing realtime when you're exporting to wav. Or if that does not work for some reason, do a real time bounce inside the project doing the EQ tweaks. Then you have a track in the project ready to be copied to the other project. But first: Try out yourself if you can play a project while recording another. I don't think it works, but I also think that no-one has ever tried it, because it sounds unnecessarily complicated.

Kalle, I'm sorry I'm not following. How do I do the EQing in realtime when exporting?

Use audible real time export. I've never tried that, though, so I just assume it works, 'cause I don't know any reason why it shouldn't. If it doesn't, the real time bounce does. But of course, automation is the most obvious option to use, whether you export or bounce, because doing things real time may require several takes, but using automation you can tweak the changes exactly spot on before you export or bounce.

I sounds to me like you want to present a tutorial, and your wishing to give examples of what the audio will sound like as you apply different processes?? is this correct?? If so I don't see this as being complicated at all. There is no reason to have 2 projects open either. I would just automate the process. If a narration is to be added, use a new track.

No Kalle, that won't work. I'm 99.999999% sure that every time I've done an Export, Sonar will turn the cursor into the swirly circle-like icon which totally prevents any further user action
