Upgrad now or Wait?
I am holding off upgrading because of cakewalks history of unstable releases. Is this one worth jumping into or should I wait for a couple hotfixes to be released first?

The general consensus seems to be much more positive than when X1 was released and YMMV. In my case, X1 PE (build 535) is so stable for the use I make of it, that I'm not considering moving to X2 for now. But that's my personal choice and certainly does not mean that I don't trust X2..., if anyone wonders. And the same goes for Windows 8. I'm very satisfied with Win 7 Pro (x64), that their's really no incentive for me to make the move.

It's working pretty well for me but I am looking forward to the first patch to get rid of some of the glitchy behavior. The stuff the Quick Fix deals with don't apply to me (so far). I'd say it's ALMOST as stable as X1 with the D patch. Mind you I'm not doing anything too crazy with it but most seem to be having a similar experience with their installs. You could also just get it and install it side by side with X1 to check it out and revert back if you find it too unstable. That's what I intended to do but I like it so much I just stuck to using X2. Cheers.

Im kinda holdin off myself as well with Win 8 out and all the newness of X2. Hoping a lot of stuff will get worked out and fixed up before I jump. Being patient is the hard part for me, Kinda like seeing everyone on the play ground with a new toy and being grounded to the corner while it all goes on

I dont think "history of unstable releases" is a fair comment... x1 initial release certainly was sub par to be sure..but that is not a trend.. more of a one-off data point. x2 is not quite as stable as X1c was for me, however if you want to wait for any software to be stable you will end up buying it three months before the next upgrade... or never buying it at all...lol

All fair comments... incredibly I jumped onto X2 after watching the webinar and being impressed by the musicality.... it stunned me and brought this persons focus back to the music. I was close to jumping off Sonar but X2 showed something I haven't quite seen in the other offerings. Hopefully the focus remains on the music now and not all the distractions that can go along with getting that aim achieved. There's a lot of help in these forums too if you run into any trouble. Cheers.

Well I'm not Mully and I'm not a power user (yet) but just to toss my two bits onto that... in X1 I was constantly screwing around with the program and not getting much done. In X2 I've been able to play more and fiddle around with annoying crud less. That may have to do with the simple fact I know more about Sonar now but seriously I think it is far easier to work with and I'm actually making music... not trying (and failing miserably) to be a studio tech. So yeah, to me personally it is much more musical simply because I find it easier to actually make music with. That is extremely important and kind of the point of audio software.

You can run X1 (assuming you are running that) and X2 side by side. So upgrade now and use later if you want. For me for home use I'm using X2, it's fine. If I was using using this for production (i.e. customer paying me) I'd probably wait for the second or third service pack before I started using X2.

I waited a week before upgrading and I kinda regret it a little. The basic stuff works, but when you get under the hood, there are a ton of little things (and a couple of big ones) that make what little hair I have left, come out faster. If you can hold off, it's probably best. Kinda frustrating too because by and large, it's pretty good. But it need TLC.

I'm staying with X1 for right now. Earlier this year, I upgraded from 8.5 Producer to X1 Producer and then sometime in the summer went to Expanded. To be honest with you, X1 is meeting all my needs and I still feel as though I am learning it.

I went from 8.5 to X1 for a week or two, and then to X2 when it came out. I'm running it on Win XP and have only had a couple of crashes when right clicking on a clip, for some reason. For me, so far, this seems like the most stable and easy to use version to date. I didn't get to learn much about X1 before switching, so I'm not sure how much is the same, but to me AudioSnap is miraculously better and easier to use, track lanes are awesome (though there are still a couple of minor areas for improvement there), skylight is great, automation, for the most part, seems greatly improved, PRV is better (though I"m still getting use to some of the tool commands) and more. One area I have trouble with is using the smart tool for automation. It just doesn't feel as intuitive to me, but I'm still getting use to it. I'm still learning a lot, but to me, this upgrade was definitely worth it, and I'm looking forward to using it with Win 8 when it comes out next week. Hope that doesn't change my tune.

XP is not supported. Reports are that it will install however but patches won't install. I wouldn't bother upgrading to Windows 8 on an XP machine as you might as well replace your hardware at the same time. My view is stick with X1 if you have XP. If you have Vista upgrade to Windows 8 (if your drivers can handle it) as the upgrade is really cheap. I'm sticking with Windows 7 right now.

I bought a new powerful desktop early 2012 so I could go 64bit with more memory using 8.5 and was really satisfied. But I've always had an issue with "controlling" the flow of windows... opening/closing/minimizing/moving/reopening... all this was done with speed and power, but I was constantly thinking "I need another monitor to move some of this stuff out of the way without closing..." Then in august I saw the Upgrade to X1 and get X2 free. The price was right and X1 had been tweaked to be pretty stable and work well in a 64 bit environment. So I bit. Had X1 for about 2 weeks then upgraded to X2.... I couldn't be happier. I feel guilty that I don't have the problems others have, but I, also, feel that X2 improved my "musicality" I find my self working more and moving things out of the way less. Now, instead of wanting a second monitor, I'm looking for a slightly larger monitor just to make everything a little bigger. If you look at the webinar, everything that is discussed has been a huge leap forward for me. Auto Zoom, Track Layers, FX chains, TH2, Breverb.... all things that came with X2 I think. Again, my system seems to work very nicely with X2 right out of the gate, so I may be spoiled, but I haven't been this excited about creating since I first started using Cakewalk (Professional? Pro Audio? it was a long time ago) As CakeAlexS says, you can run X1 and X2 side by side. If you have issues with X2, use X1 until they're worked out. BUT if you're like me and your problems are minimal you'll be doing yourself a favor by using X2 Just my 2 cents (actually, more like 4 cents, sorry) Best, Rob

Just jumped on the X2 train this week... I really like the new GUI. It's cleaner somehow and easy on the eyes. I read mixed reviews on Breverb, but I have to say that every time I've used it, it's sat well in the mix. I'm looking forward to putting it to some serious use. But the coolest thing for me in the short time I've had it was that I have a song I have been working on a song that incorporates a loop section with a repeating high frequency percussive sound that was really detracting from the main rhythm. I really like the loop, but was bummed about that sound. I threw RMix on it and with some experimentation, I was able to completely removed the offending frequencys without effecting the rest of the loop. I was blown away. I couldn't have achieved the same result with EQ alone. I do wish that you could have more than 1 area of focus in RMix, but I'm definitely not complaining. I've had 2 white screens / freezes, but no harm was done. They seemed random (one happened while I was away from my DAW), but I'll figure it out... I've paid $179 - $200+ for many Sonar upgrades over the years... $99 is a great deal. V

X-2 is awesome. The audio snap. The lanes. The new zoom. The midi is easier to edit. After a few tweaks on my new computer it's pretty stable, but, I Ctrl+S save constantly in case of crashes. That's a habit I got from X-1 while my last band tracked song after song and every once in a while CRASH......AAAAHHH. I hate asking a singer to do another take.

To the OP: Assuming your hardware can support X2 and you can afford the cost of the upgrade I can't see any reason not to upgrade. You don't need to uninstall any previous versions so if your learning curve would impact your productivity you can maintain what you are currently using. As for the 'history of unstable releases' you may want to consider that the majority of people who use Sonar do not comment on how well it is working. In the IT support biz we have a saying: "How come you never call me when it works?" FWIW: I did the upgrade the day it was available and I have found it to be stable and the enhancements are really fantastic. I'd say go for it. Regards

Although the release is generally stable there are issues. Notable with the implementation of take lanes in midi. The mute lane function is unreliable when recording multiple takes and deleting take lanes. Also there are reports of issues with audio clip fades. I have not tested the last one myself. Many of the new features are great but IMHO I would suggest you wait till at lease the first patch to see if issues like this are addressed.
