In X2, I'm trying to select a clip (containing MIDI) in a simple instrument track in the track view, and bounce it to audio.

You'll need to make sure that the track is routed to somewhere that produces audio. Are you sure it is routed to your master buss or some other down stream buss?
That downstream buss will need to have a valid audio output as well. For example a master buss assigned to no output won't work.

What you are exporting is the AUDIO produced by the midi. So, you have to make sure the audio track associated with the midi is selected.
Sonar will then mix it down, depending on what you tell it to do in the ensuing options.

You'll need to make sure that the track is routed to somewhere that produces audio. Are you sure it is routed to your master buss or some other down stream buss?
That downstream buss will need to have a valid audio output as well. For example a master buss assigned to no output won't work.

Don't clips in simple instrument tracks have audio output?

Be sure to select the AUDIO track which contains the synth..... by doing that, even though there is not a wave there, it still gets treated like there is and you will be able to export/bounce it.
Highlight the clip... you can select all sorts of different things in multiple tracks by holding control while you click

^^^^ everything above. You can't select a MIDI clip *only* and bounce to audio, something else - the synth track itself in this case - needs to be selected as well.
Edit: I don't think I've ever tried bouncing/freezing just a clip's worth of a synth track. Anyone else?

What all the previous are aiming at, but not saying directly:
As you clearly say you are using Simple Instrument Track, so there is no audio track to select.
Selecting clips won't do. They include only MIDI. You must click at the track number in order to select the actual track, both its MIDI and audio sections. (NOT the blue grouping triangle, but beside it, so that the whole track changes colour).
And if you only want to bounce a part of the track, you must select that part in the timeline above the tracks.

Thank you! To the original poster - I owe you an apology for not having THROUGHLY read your clear indication that this was a simple instrument track.
I was all hopped up on Swedish Fish, and you don't even want to know what other counter-productive things that sugar buzz made me do. (example - for no apparent need or reason I phoned the ex-wife and actually asked her how she was doing - you just DON'T want to know)

You are correct, they do but unless that audio output is routed to somewhere that is actually capable of putting out audio it won't work. For example if your SIT output is set to master but the master is set to none or a silent buss you will get that error message. That was why I suggested checking the downstream buss.
