Installation question - what and how to install

Hi there,

I'll try to make my question brief, but there's alot of things I'm wondering about.
I have sonar 8, 8.5, x1 exp, and x2. Now I have a new pc (64bit) with an ssd (which is great) and I'm reinstalling everything.
What I want is to have only X2 installed, but all the plugins, presets and templates from all versions available.
Only it is not quite clear to me how the versions all differ on this.
I know the pantheon reverb and session drummer 2 (other content than 3) come with 8(.5) , but is there other content/plugin
that might be usefull from those versions. Also I heard that the loops and one shots differ between X1 and X2 and would be comlimental, but then again I also hear that the difference is that the X2 library contains the X1 loops and one shots combined with the beatscape content. Are there other differences, or is it just that ?
Does it make sense to have beatscape and the lib installed, or will just the X2 loops and one shots do?
It's all very confusing to me, mainly regarding the plugin content. Seperate installers (like guitar rig and stuff) I don't care about, they can be installed independantly and arent all needed, but I do want the most from my different versions.
So how can I make sure I have every plugin, preset, template and piece of content, but no redundant files on my hard drive ?
Since my ssd is quite expensive I don't want to waste space.
Next to this I'm also wondering how to set all the folder locations in X2 for best performance. I'm using a 256GB Sata600 SSD (Samsung 830) for my os, software and libraries and a 1TB seagate HDD for tracking.
Thanks in advance for anyone able to help me get some of these issues clear and a great day to you all,

Paul

Bear in mind that a lot of the older plugins, notably the Dxi ones will not run under Sonar 64, so you're better off not even installing them.

Those that you do want to install - like the Pantheon are bets done via a custom install of 8.5

Just pop the dis in as though you were going to do a full install, then deselect everything apart from the "missing" plugins.

Quite honestly, you won't even miss Pantheon - the new Breverb is vastly superior in every aspect.

But don't even attempt this until you've got X2 totally up and running

a 256gB SSD is fine for your OS & programs, but libraries? You'll fill it up in no time
You're better off adding a 3rd HDD for sample libraries, both in terms of space requirements and you won't be bottle necking your system drive by having samples accessed from it

    Disc 1 - OS & Programs
    Disc 2 - Cakewalk Projects
Disc 3 - Sample Libraries, including all loops etc

You can select all this during install.

If you don't use Beatscape - don't install it!

I happen to have chosen to place the sound libraries on the same drive as the audio tracks, and do not have any issues on my machine.
I do not know if this is the best placement, it just made sense to me at the time that OS and program fetches would be likely concurrent with the tracking, so splitting those seemed logical.

I added the sample libraries to the non-OS drive as well, because I reasoned that with the amount of memory I have (32 GB), any needed sound samples would be largely loaded into memory on project load, at a point in time where tracking would not be occurring (wouldn't be hitting play/record during project load).
You can ALWAYS move them and just tell Cakewalk any new locations through Preferences, so I recommend starting with an approach that limits space on your SSD, and seeing if that causes any performance problems.

You will get new codes for Dim Pro, Rapture and any PC modules which were purchased separately, and X2 itself of course

Usually Sonar installs contain all the past plugins - they just aren't selected for the default install. Try a custom install of X2 & see what's in the various plugin folders.
