Well if it is I hope it's C++ .NET. As long as it's .NET it doesn't matter really, the Common Language Runtime doesn't really dictate what language you use. They could program a bit in COBOL.NET and a bit in Visual Basic .NET, if they wanted it would all compile the same. From the technical perspetive I assumed they moved over to the .NET platform when they redesigned Sonar onto X1. Hopefully I'm not mistaken.

But maybe they have legacy code in there as well, maybe some programming libraries they have require it. Hell I don't know, I blame Vista for everything :).

There you go, in fact I didn't think of this. On the job spec they asking for experience in Apple OS's. I am assuming that is for plugin development? If so C++ is a sensible strategy as it is good for cross platform, in fact writing VST's may actively require it. I forgot .NET really isn't MAC friendly (I assumed Cakewalk is 100% PC and it isn't), and a lot of people actively use C++ for drivers (although well C++ is a nightmare to test, I hope things have changed!) 

All makes sense now, these forums are written in ASP.NET (although it is third party app, scroll down to the bottom of the webpage to find out what it is) and they never get updated, that's because they have a different skillset! I was wrong they are not primarily .Net developers, but they may certainly have to access .NET programming libraries for installers etc.

The importance of XP to M/soft in the business world is also demonstrated by the resources, development and marketing $s they're throwing at "XP mode" virtual machine in Win 8, it's a pity it doesn't support XP drivers. If it did then moving away from XP would not be so prohibitively expensive for me.

According to Microsoft's own numbers, there are nearly 400 million XP and Vista machines in the world today and 500 million Windows 7 & 8 machines. If you look at business users specifically, the XP/Vista numbers actually exceed W7/8. There's good reason for that: if you rely on a workstation in your business, you stabilize it, standardize it and then leave it the flick alone. 

I can only imagine what will happen when every business application vendor announces that no updates are going to be available to those 400 million users. Fortunately, most vendors aren't bound by the Windows Logo program, which lets Microsoft dictate what they can and cannot do. 

I am not convinced that there is any technical reason for being unable to distribute an installer that's Vista/XP compatible, other than Microsoft is forcing vendors to abandon those operating systems in order to spur sales. Yes, I know that critical pieces of a SONAR installation are actually sourced from Microsoft and have to be distributed unmodified.

 I can understand the apprehension to upgrade as opposed to a fresh clean install. I have three computers one was an XP system and the other two were running Vista one of those was my DAW,two of them are 64 bit. I picked up a three license install disk from Microsoft for a really good price Win7 home 64 or 32 bit option. The  upgrade installations  of all three went off without a problem. I am convinced that if you have no issues with your present OS then an upgrade isn't a problem.

 I feel I saved a lot of headaches by not opting to reload all of my drivers and software again. If I were starting from scratch then a fresh install would have been my first choice,but for those of us with a lot of software  relocating all of those serial numbers and codes /re organizing file locations can be a real pain .

 If you are using Vista it's your call but with the approach of win 8 Win 7 might come down in price and Win 8 for 69.00 is very reasonable IMO.

 I am not adding anything touch screen to my machine in the near future nor am I adding "apps" which seem to be one of the points of focus in Win8. Win 7 should play well with X2 for a long time to come.

  I ran Sonar in Vista successfully for a long time and it seems that it will play ok with vista now but if it were me I would have no desire to keep with a program that 1. Is no longer going to be supported and 2. was probably one of the biggest bungles by Microsoft in a long time in terms of reported user problems. Personally it worked ok for me but with a rewritten X2 who knows how it will behave?

I wouldn't want to be sitting at the end of a three week  track session and have a problem that blows it all away.

 I'm sure there are some horror stories of upgrading, maybe I was fortunate but I think even a side install would get you there and reasonably.Keep both OS if it makes you queasy to upgrade.JMO

I'm unclear.  Is a Vista 64 to Windows 8 upgrade going to be simply a matter of running some kind of "Upgrade.exe" disk or download I will purchase from Microsoft?  A half hour or so process?  No reinstalls of other programs?

Because I once tried an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 and gave up and got a refund from Microsoft for the attempted upgrade.

If it is not this easy, this is a deal-breaker for upgrading to X2.  My Vista computer suits me fine for another year or two.

Well, some of us only updated to Win7 from Vista (a perfectly decent OS once they'd got the first service pack out) in the last couple of weeks.....

Why now? Two reasons. Sonar X2 and SSD support. And time to build a new PC in any case :-).

As for Windows 8, me, I'll be waiting until after they get service pack 1 out.

And until I can see what hardware is and isn't supported and how well/quickly it's supported.

I'll grab my cheap copy of 8, but it's not getting installed until I - and it - are good and ready.

By the way - aren't the cheap Win7 to Win8 upgrades only available to people with OEM copies of Win 7 - i.e. supplied pre-installed on the computer or if you bought an OEM ("system builder", not "retail") version to install yourself?
