Hey JB, what's the DC resistance of the new PUP? It's the only way I can guess about tone. Never bothered to count wraps before.
Looks like a beauty. The plates look very thick and I can't see any trace of potting wax in the picture.
Unless he has a meter he probably can't tell you as I didn't tell him.
The reason is because in my opinion it doesn't mean anything to him.
The big problem as you probably already know is that the readings change with temperature so unless he read the pup in the same room at the same time....worthless info.
Seymour Duncan tries to explain that to customers to help prevent all the calls because
people think something is wrong because the readings don't match.
The reading is important to the maker when trying to build for desired results.
I shot for a 5.6k. Reason is I used Alnico 5 mags for power and since it was hopefully going to work
well in bridge position and Jon wanted more lows I didn't want it to be heavy with highs.
Using the resistance to gauge the pup?
Manufacturers use "batch" ...don't think they read every pup they make and don't believe that
the posted readings are good to follow- IMO. Best to read how they describe how the pup should
sound.
One must realize that not every roll of wire is the same...even if it's labeled 42AWG there are variances between the rolls. SD knows this very well.
So....5.6K .....doesn't the magnets effect performance? ....doesn't the wire gauge?...and some
believe the coating does too..and I agree that it does make a difference. What about tension?
Yes, even tension effects the ability of the pup. So a 5.6k pup made with other components than
what I used could yield a much different pup.
So...does a 5.6k with Alnico 2 sound the same as 5.6k with Alnico 5 , 3, 4, 8 ?
Coated or uncoated wire? What size difference does the coating make?
I really think that the best thing for one to go with is how the manufacturer describes
the characteristics of the pup....not the resistance reading. It just doesn't tell you much- alone and
on the back end. If you believe it does...no problem....5.6K.
