Recording Youtube or other Internet Audio with X2
Is it possible to record computer audio from the internet with Sonar X2? IOW...Can I stream audio from a Youtube video into X2? I tried to use Audacity but I can't get it to work. I'm trying to get some audio snipets to load into a sampler.

Check your MOTU manual to see if it has a "loopback" function. I think I've read that some of the MOTU stuff does. Cheers.

Otherwise you can just physically hook your outputs to your inputs and do it that way. There are quite a few threads here on the forum discussion this issue. Use google to search for them because the forum search sucks.

Better yet, get the free version of Real Player. Then when you play something on YouTube it will give you the option to save it. You can then save it and convert the FLV file to a MP3 or MP4 or other formats.

I use a freeware program called YTD Video Downloader, and it allows me to download videos vrom YOuTube to my hard drive. It then has a convert function that allows me to subsequently convert downloaded clips to various formats, including different video formats, as well as conversion to several audio type - MP3, WMA, etc. I use this all the time, then import the converted audio files into Sonar. Here is a link to their site - just say no on any upgrades (they cost money) and be careful not to allow additional tool bars to get installed (there will likely be a checked box that you have to remove the check to prevent some tool bar from getting installed). Other than that, the program works GREAT and I can stack up a bunch of download requests, so I may setup 20-30 videos to get downloaded one after the other, while I go back to sleep or cooking or whatever. Here is that link: http://www.youtubedownloadersite.com/ Bob Bone

I use the same "Free Download Manager" FDM that I use to d/l files from my Cakewalk Account.
If you just want the audio I bet you could setup a loopback in CueMix like Beepster suggest.

I couldn't find any loopback option when I searched the manual. But, I found something I downloaded from the internet that seems to work. I used to use a site on the net that would convert it right there but Google seems to have pooped on it.

I don't know if the 896 works the same as the ultralite or not, but here's how to do it on the MOTU Ultralite: In the MOTU AUDIO CONSOLE, set up the RETURN ASSIGN to MIX 1. in Sonar, for the input of your track, choose STEREO AUDIO MOTU ASIO RETURN 1 (assuming you are in ASIO mode) that setup will allow you to record the output of the soundcard (MOTU) to the input of any streaming player.

Is any of that doing extra A/D conversions? Just curious, Bob Bone

is that question directed at me, Bob? if so, I'm not sure. I'm guessing it stays in the ditigal realm with that internal routing in the MOTU.

It was for anyone who might know or have an idea. I just wasn't sure, but it seems like it would have converted it to audio and then back to digital- I was just wondering if using the YTD Downloader was any cleaner. Bob Bone

scook I have used this http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html or SoundForge to rip audio out of video files that SONAR does not support. Did not know this could be done with SoundForge - Thanks! Just gave it a try and it works great!

Cool, I got it to work. I used my phones output. So whatever audio I get to my phones is recorded at the return. You got to watch out for feedback and levels! lol Or just turn off the monitoring input selection. lol Thanks a bunch! That was easy enough. Never really messed with returns before...

Crappy old soundblaster cards have "what you hear" for a record option, I still have a soundblaster in one of my computers so I use that for lifting Utube songs. I don't care about the quality. Probably true about the D/A then A/D conversion, because I record with Wave lab and I can set the recording to any format, so it must just be an audio signal coming in just as if you used the input jack.

Thanks, Cactus. That stretched my brain some just getting that far - it's encouraging that at least (or at most) one other soul or vocalist thought so on the conversions. (yes, I meant to separate 'other soul' and 'vocalist') hee hee Bob Bone

Do you have SPDIF in/out? That's a good option as well and keeps your headphone out free. However depending on the headphone output it may or may not be more or less quality. Someone smarter than I and more familiar with the gear would have to answer that. And yeah... I forgot about the feedback loop problem. Sorry. Seems you figured that one out on your own though. Cheers.

Oh and I remembered the simple conclusion I came to with the help of other suggestions here... Play vid/streaming audio on my internet laptop. Use laptop output and adapters/cables to feed directly to the multi ins on my Scarlett interface which is of course connected to my DAW. That way I don't have to fiddle faddle with any weird routing or software/resource nonsense AND I can use the input trims on the interface to attenuate levels as needed... without feedback loops or the like either. Obviously this requires a second computer in the room and some extra cabling gack but I'd imagine most of us have secondary systems around and the adapters/cabling is pretty cheap (1/8" stereo splitter to two 1/4" mono). Sorry if I'm being obnoxiously obvious... but that's how I roll. Path of least resistance, leaf in a stream... and all that rot. Cheers.

Cool, I got it to work. I used my phones output. So whatever audio I get to my phones is recorded at the return. Just make sure you turn the Windows Sounds off or you'll get sounds you don't expect in your recording. For YouTube the Real Player solution I gave you is best. I've downloaded whole concerts in High Definition from Youube using it.

I downloaded the Real Player. Will check it out tomorrow. I like the laptop out to audio input on the DAW idea. That's easy enough. lol Heck if the old iphone is strategically placed I can steam video from it into my DAW. The return approach is super cool. Just gotta watch yer levels. I knew there had to be a way to route computer audio into the DAW somehow. I'll mess with it more tomorrow. It's late! Thanks guys!

It really depends on the quality your after. Most content on the internet is already lo-fi anyhow so might as well keep it that way. I'm only after real old rare songs I'm thinking about doing. stay tuned to the song forum for this little gem. 1 hit wonder band. The Cars covered it latter. It has a cultish following. It takes 5 minutes to learn. I played it when I was 9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtXtOssG_II

Yeah, I've heard that track before. Pretty cool stuff. I was ripping some stuff off of my Fringe Blu Ray DVDs. I went light pipe from my PS3 into the optical in on my MOTU 896mk3. Wow, the audio sounds incredible. It's all riddled with background music and that's not really what I'm shooting for. But whatever, I managed to grab some stuff and load it into my sampler and create some musical stuff with it but not much. It's just impossible to find good quality dialogue without any music in the background these days. I might get on Netflix and play some old movies and see it there is anything interesting to snag. Which, also had dawned on me that I might also be able to go to Youtube and stream audio from the PS3 to my DAW that way. Doh!
