Intermittent MIDI Playback in a project...

Hi Guys,

Been using Cakewalk Sonar X1 Producer for a couple years now and am very happy with it. I'm a casual user.
Up until now, I have been using it for mixing pre-recorded Audio (.WAV) files.

I'm moving into MIDI for the first time, and I've gone through many forums and the tutorials to make sure
I'm not posting flooby-dust here. I am a neophyte to MIDI.

1. What I'm trying to do: Take existing midi files/clips (.mid) and drop them into my project (which already has many audio (.WAV) clips)

2. Specs: Win7/64 Workstation, SB X-FI Go Pro. Lots of Memory and dual core AMD.

3. Project Configuration for MIDI input :
    a. Inserted Softsynth - Cakewalk TTS-1
    b. Inserted a MIDI Channel: Input = <Omni>. Output = <CakeWalk TTS-1>
    c. Audio Channel associated with TTS-1: Input = <Cakewalk TTS-1  Output 1: Stereo>. Output = <Master>

4. Drag a 2 second midi A chord file onto the MIDI Channel's track, followed by a 2 second D chord, followed by a 2 second E chord.

5. Hit <Play> and I see the V-U LED bar deflect a each MIDI chord is "Played" on the MIDI channel

6. I only hear the chords intermittently through the "Audio" (Icon is keyboad with a MIDI connector) channel. It is not consistent which chords
I hear from play to play.

So.... I'm stumped. Would appreciate any guidance here.

Thanks in advance

Helllo Dusty. Sounds like you are over complicating the task.

    1. Sonar automatically re-routes incoming midi to the selected track so set your midi channel on
    your midi input to 1.

With the input set to "omni", every note played is sent to ALL channels.
THIS will overload your midi and cause the intermittent playback.

    2.Create the tts-1 as a simple instrument from the insert menu and drag your midi files there;
you don't need three tracks to play midi through a softsynth.

    hope this helps,

    peace

    Hi Mel,
    Thank you :)

Based on your response, here is what I did:

    1. Inserted Cakewalk TTS-1 1 as a Simple Instrument.
        a. Input - None
        b. Output - Master
        c. Channel, Bank, Patch = None

    2. Drug my midi chords onto the track panel. This created a MIDI Device that I configured as shown:
        a. Input - None
        b. Output Cakewalk TTS-1 1
        c. Channel, Bank, Patch = None

No Joy :(. Still Intermittent play of the chords when my other tracks (audio) are playing.

I appreciate any further thoughts you may have. This is quite frustrating as it seems like this
    should be so straightforward.

    Thanks and cheers,

Too small MIDI playback buffers will cause intermittent playback.

    Go to prefs-->MIDI-->Playback & Recording--->playback.

They are probably set at 250 msecs. Try increasing that to 500.

Here is a link to one of my X1 videos on MIDI routing that may be useful.

    Hi Guys,
The Buffer tip from FastBikerBoy seems to have done the trick thus far.
    Thank  you Amigo!

Hopefully I can now disappear into the composition ether only to return
when my buffers overflow and I'm writing address pointers into data locations ;)

    Best to all!!

I think FBB has this post saved off somewhere - it seems like I see it quite often :)

I am pretty much just yanking his chain - it is really quite a common problem, and his post is exactly what is needed most of the time to correct that situation.

    Good job, FBB :)

Yep, that's my fix for everything.

I could be wrong but IIRC the recommendation is 500 and the default is 250.
